Expository: Lymphoma

There are many sources of fear in the world today. One of the largest fear one can have is to be diagnosed with Cancer. This expository piece will delve into the history of Cancer, the symptoms of it, the treatment options, and the road to recovery. Cancer is a disease that all too many people are familiar with. According to the National Center for Health Statistics survey, this debilitating disease kills approximately 7.6 million people a year. The first cases of cancer date all the way back to the year 1600 BC. Over the years the methods of treatment have become more effective. We see more people surviving from Cancer than ever before. The range of different types of cancer proves to be rather expansive.
Not many years after the first discoveries of Cancer were made, an Italian anatomist name Marcello Malpighi, also called the “Father of Microanatomy”, started studying the anatomy of the internal organs. He came across studies of follicular cancer and found Lymphoma. Lymphoma is cancer of the lymph nodes. Lymphoma is the seventh most common form of cancer contracted in the world. There are many subtypes of Lymphoma, such as Hodgkin’s, and Non-Hodgkin’s. The main difference between the two is the presence or absence of a type of cell called the Reed–Sternberg cell. If the cell is present, the patient has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Malpighi also found that this type of cancer is genetic. While there are not many things one can do to avoid getting cancer, there are some warning signs to look out for.

In conclusion, being diagnosed with Lymphoma is scary. Having Cancer is taxing both mentally and physically. It is vital to know that there are plenty of treatment options available. Additionally, the patient must remain positive, and reach out for support from family and friends. I hope that the reader can learn about the history of Lymphoma, the symptoms and diagnosis, the road to recovery, and remission. This disease is something that effects so many people and we are so close to finally finding the cure. The history of medicine has already evolved so much, and time can only tell what the future may hold. There are multiple organizations in place that raise money for cancer research. Hopefully there will be a cure for cancer sometime soon
