These labels could potentially contribute to increase the awareness of a healthy nutrition, reduce the consumption of high-calorie and sugar products, and reduce obesity. II. When talking about health, if people is able to visualize what is good (healthy) and what is bad for health, they will choose the option that does not harm them. B. People should become aware of the link between healthy food and a better life. It is important to show the benefits of a healthy diet. C. On the other hand, it is important to state the link between junk food and obesity, and the likelihood of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. D. When labeling food, it is critical to do it in a way that everybody can understand the actual content of food. Therefore, people will be able to choose the healthiest option. III. In Lee Ann Fisher Baron’s “Junk Science,” she claims that the “food industry with the help of federal regulators” sometimes use “[a science that] bypasses [the] system of peer review. Presented directly to the public by…‘experts’ or ‘activists,’ often with little or no supporting evidence, this ‘junk science’ undermines the ability…[for] everyday consumers to make rational decisions” (921). Yet Americans still have a lot of faith in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to a 2013 Pew Research study, 65% of Americans are “very favorable” or “mostly favorable” of the FDA. When it comes to what people put in their bodies, the FDA has a moral obligation to be truthful and transparent. The bottom line of the FDA’s myriad of responsibilities is to help protect the health of Americans. Deciding what to eat is a critical part of living healthily, and consumers must be able to trust that this massive government agency is informing them properly of the contents of food. While the FDA does an excellent job in many areas, it has flaws in other areas. One of its flaws is allowing the food industry to print food labels that are deceptive, unclear, or simply not true (known as misbranding). This is quite the hot topic because a Google search for “Should I trust food labels” returns well over 20 million results, many of which are blog posts from online writers begging their readers not to trust food labels. Fast food companies have caused a massive negative impact to society over the last couple of years despite the companies promise to produce healthy and nutritious meals. Many people have already been affected by the damages caused by eating junk food. During the 1950s, the United States Of America had an obesity rate of under 10 percent and as the fast food chain increased in 1975, the obesity rate rose up to a whopping 32 percent and has only kept growing. Nutrition is an important part of our daily lives because of the numerous effects it has on our health and fitness. There are many different influences that can affect a person’s nutritional habits. The type of environment and the way people are raised often affect the way they diet and whether that diet is healthy or unhealthy. Because a person cannot always choose how and where he or she is raised, education concerning nutrition and healthy diets should be taught to all ages and social classes. Lack of nutritional education and obesity rates are positively correlated in the United States. Some grocery stores started to post very informative information in the produce section. It labels the nutritional facts next to the item you are considering purchasing. Some of these labels give detail about the vitamins and how it impacts your body. For example, next to bananas at a Wholefoods grocery store the label read high in potassium and will give you energy. Having a healthy body can contribute to an individual’s overall well being and happiness. In the reading about virtue and health by Gary Ferngren, we learn about the meaning of ‘virtue’ in the ancient world which referred to the “quality or proficiency of men…” instead of in reference to moral behavior (Ferngren 176). The Greeks considered health to be essential to one’s virtue. Maintaining a healthy diet will help an individual perform better. Personally, I find that healthy habits are beneficial and uplifting for the soul. Those days when I eat right and am active, I am in high spirits, I feel good, and I am more motivated to achieve things. When I feel healthy on the inside, I have greater self-esteem and confidence and this is really important when it comes to how others view themselves or they potential.
