Emily in the short story “A Rose for Emily,” written by William Faulkner, is an old woman who lived her life as a mystery. She clings on to her old living styles regardless of the time period or the people around her that try to break her unusual obsessions. She had a troublesome life and she drove her entire life through the control as her family and society rules over her. “Alive, Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town” (33); this shows that Emily was much taken care of because who her father was. Her father had loaned money to the town, this was the town’s way of repaying her father. But when the next generation with more modern ideas came, this arrangement caused problems; they tried to stop this deal, but Emily refused to pay taxes for a city that she felt as if they owed her instead. He was a very dominating person and always wanted to keep total control over her. He did not allow her to date even when she was the appropriate age to do so. These actions make the suggestion that the relationship between Emily and her father was not at all a normal father and daughter relationship. The narrator never mentions anything about Emily’s mother, this shows just how alone she was with him when he was alive. He controlled her totally until his passing, and even kept on controlling her from past the grave. By isolating her so extremely from whatever is left of the town when he was alive, to ensure she didn 't have any significant others or a spouse, he set her up for a lifestyle that was almost impossible for her to get away, until her
