In striving to maintain the highest ethical standards during this research, the researcher will show a responsibility to scholarship. This will involve taking care not to plagiarize, nor to falsify information, and to avoid deception of any kind (Yin, 2014, p. 77). Since nearly all case studies, this one being no exception, are about human affairs, the guidelines set forth by the National Research Council (2003) will be followed. These include:
• gaining informed consent,
• protecting participants from harm,
• protecting the privacy and confidentiality of those who participate,
• taking special precautions to protect those who may be especially vulnerable,
• and selecting participants equitably.
All participation will be strictly voluntary. The participants will be recruited using purposeful sampling, and will be screened to determine eligibility. In total, there will be a minimum of twenty participants. A minimum of sixteen participants will be given an online survey. A face-to-face interview will be conducted with four participants.
Three types of problems can negatively affect case study research. The relationship between the researcher and the participant, the possibility of subjective interpretations, and the design itself are all possible pitfalls. To avoid possible ethical violations, great care will be taken by the researcher to maintain objectivity during the interview process. Yin (2014) cautions the researcher to ask conversational questions in an unbiased manner, and to rephrase “why questions” into “how” questions to decrease the possibility of creating defensiveness. 1. The parameters set for participation in this study are bound to kindergarten teachers who have taught kindergarten at least one year prior to the 2000-2001 school year and during the 2013-2014 school year. The inclusion criteria ensures that the participants had experience with teaching kindergarten before curricular changes mandated by NCLB in 2001 and then again due to CCRS in 2012.
2. The qualitative case study design of this study serves as a delimitation. The thick, rich data that will be collected, analyzed, and reported upon will help the reader understand a real-world case framed within contextual conditions (Yin, 2014). However, due to the case study design, the results may not be able to be generalized to a larger population of kindergarten teachers.
