As a third year student majoring in biology, I can tell all the trials and tribulations you might face when you get to UC Davis. When I first arrived to UC Davis, numerous biology students, most of who were either pre-health or graduate school-bound, surrounded me. Within weeks of being at UC Davis, I quickly realized that lots of these students were exceptionally smart and extremely dedicated, working very hard to get good grades. At times, I felt like Mufasa from the Lion King, getting trampled on by the stampede of intelligence from other biology students. I assumed that I came to college to have fun, learn about biology, get good grades, and eventually move on to veterinary school.

Looking back, I wish I would have known what college was going to be like as a biology student. I also wished that I didn’t base my academic decisions based on what other people were doing. While tips on how to succeed as a biology student might not be helpful to me anymore, all you new freshman and transfer students could benefit tremendously from these tips. If you want to do well in school and get the most out of being a biology major at UC Davis, you should be a positive deviant; someone who doesn’t follow what other people do, leading their own path to success. In order to be a positive deviant, you should follow these four tips.

Tip #1: Don’t Underestimate the Difficulty of College

First, in order to be a positive deviant I suggest that you should not underestimate how hard your first quarter at UC Davis will be, like every other incoming UC Davis student thinks. While high school or community college might have been easy, you should not expect college to be the same. More than likely, most UC Davis students have the same belief as you. If ...

...edule; on days that I had class early in the morning, I forced myself to go to bed earlier the night before. I attempted to prevent myself from not getting enough rest. In the process of forcing myself to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, I started to feel less tired in the morning and throughout the day. I was sleeping a lot less in my morning classes and I was able to focus better in all of my classes. While I know that this might be the hardest thing for a restless, stress-induced biology student to do, you should try implementing this technique. You will feel a lot less tired while being more alert during the day when compared to your other biology friends and classmates who constantly stay up late or pull-all-nighters to study for chemistry or biology or calculus. Not only will this make you feel better, but you will also most likely see your grades improve.

Essay A Study On The Biology Lab

- As I walked into room 202, I could not contain my excitement. Seeing the biology lab for the first time, my mind was filled with the thoughts of dissecting frogs and growing peas to show the wonders of genetics as Mendel had. The walls were lined with cabinets with glass panels in the doors; I could see the equipment just beyond the dusty panes: microscopes, beakers of all sizes, Erlenmeyer flasks, and diagrams of dissected animals. My instructor floated through the door and slowly sat in her chair at the front of the room....   [tags: Education, Standardized test, Teacher, Test]

Essay on Service, A Necessity for Students

- Throughout their careers, students are asked to complete a variety of tasks. Although many may argue otherwise, it is clear that community service should be required because it encourages the progress of students at school, gives them exposure to the world, and provides students with knowledge that is inaccessible at school....   [tags: Education, Service Opportunities, Students]
