Report writing is very important in the police field. An officer must be able to accurately record information regarding those activities and present it to those who were not there while also doing their job well. A person 's guilt or innocence may rest on information present or absent in these records (Server).
All officers need to write police reports. Police Officers are evaluated based on their written reports. Good police work is maintained completely by an officer 's ability to present accurate, detailed and informative information in a police report. Many people pass judgment on others based on much of the information presented in these police reports. Offense reports are usually one of the more detailed, if not the most detailed of police reports. These reports generally contain considerably “more information about the particular methods a crime has been carried out, the specific injuries or property damages sustained by a victim and all the different directions an officer took to investigate the crime” (Redwine). These reports usually contain all of the necessary information to obtain arrest warrants for the suspects, so that means that most of that information is not needed on the arrest report once the suspect is taken into custody. This form provides blank spaces for hand written information as well as a number of small boxes to be filled in. Most of the pages have coded numbers. These numbers refer to each specific crime, victim, witness, suspect and piece of property involved in the offense (Redwine). Conser, “A craft usually involves the development of skills that are generally learned through experience, not in a classroom (Conser, 2011, p.216). Conser also states, “the following are the typical characteristic identified criteria of profession: extensive preparation through education and training, a specific and specialized body of knowledge, a code of ethics (Conser, 2011, p.215).
This is very true in today's police work. A police department has to be able to stand the test of time. By this I mean must be capable of enduring changes in government, and be able to react to any situation they may encounter.
