Who?
Currently, the police and government have a broad variety of who the terrorist attacks could be coming from. The top suspect right now is a so called “black widow” named Ruzanna Ibragimova. She is twenty two years old and a widow to a former terrorist who died in a previous attack. The group of “black widows” she is claimed to be part of are all widows of former terrorists. They are trained to follow their husband’s footsteps and get revenge for their death by military forces, rather than suicide. This tactic was also encouraged through an Internet video last June by a Chechen rebel leader named Doku Umarov. He posted a video of himself encouraging Islamist militants to destroy the olympics, which he called “satanic dances on the bones of our ancestors”. Mark Galeotti, a professor at New York University, states that Doku Umarov is a big influence towards terrorists, but has limited power. He’s more of a symbolic person, rather than someone who controls everything that happens. Apparently, Doku Umarov personally commanded Abu-Umar al-Shishani to control the terrorist attacks in Russia.
The other suspects in the matter are an insurgent group in Dagestan who posted an online video with two men in explosive vests. The two said that if Russian President, Vladimir Putin, didn’t cancel the winter olympics, they were preparing a “present” for him and the Olympic visitors. In the video, they also claim that the two men were responsible for organizing a pair of suicide bombings that killed thirty four people last month in the southern Russian city of Volgograd. Volgograd is only a little more than four hundred miles away from Sochi, where the olympics are being held this year. Some believe that the attacks in Volgograd were just dist...

The controversy in the Munich Olympic games was that there was a terrorist attack.During the Munich Games, security guards ignored what they thought were maintance works, but the eight men in warm-up suits were members of Black September, a terrorist group linked to the Palestine Liberation Organization. They entered the suite of the Israeli quarters in the Olympic Village and killed a coach and weight lifter and then took nine other Israelis hostage. The terrorists demanded the release of 200 Arabs from Israeli prisons and a

The year is 1972 and people are ready for the summer Olympics. Unfortunately for the eager sports spectators the 1972 Munich Olympics have a much more tragic story line. People don’t talk about any records broken or international competitiveness, instead people remember the Munich Games because of the hostage situation. A Palestinian formed group called the Black September terrorist captured nine Israeli Olympic athletes. Jim McKay one of the Olympic sportscasters at the games says, “The Munich tragedy was the biggest event in my career and the most terrible.” Truly Munich’s is tarnishing the Olympic Games. Even today the impact and repercussions of the game can be felt not only with the heightened security protocol but a lasting social impact as well.

Terrorism is not a new concept and although the treat has been highlighted by the events of September 11th, there has been a history of terrorism in America leading as far back as the establishment of the country. Although the proverb of “one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter” can be true on certain accounts, there is a distinction. The CIA uses a definition outlined by Title 22 Section 2656f(d) of the US Code, which states, "terrorism means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents ” (2013). This definition has two important aspects, politically motivated violence and the targeting noncombatants. These two aspects address the motive and methods of a terrorist organization. Through the understanding of this definition it becomes clear that organizations like Al-Qaeda are ...

Under a backdrop of systematic fear and terror, the Stalinist juggernaut flourished. Stalin’s purges, otherwise known as the “Great Terror”, grew from his obsession and desire for sole dictatorship, marking a period of extreme persecution and oppression in the Soviet Union during the late 1930s. “The purges did not merely remove potential enemies. They also raised up a new ruling elite which Stalin had reason to think he would find more dependable.” (Historian David Christian, 1994). While Stalin purged virtually all his potential enemies, he not only profited from removing his long-term opponents, but in doing so, also caused fear in future ones. This created a party that had virtually no opposition, a new ruling elite that would be unstoppable, and in turn negatively impacted a range of sections such as the Communist Party, the people of Russia and the progress in the Soviet community, as well as the military in late 1930 Soviet society.

The Russo-Chechen war that ended in 1996 should have given the Russian government a feel of things to come when they decided to attack in late September of last year. Triggered by security challenges to the State, Russia decided that the democracy would be in danger if they didn’t act. Russia was in a politically unstable situation right now with the resignation of Yeltsin, and the current Presidential elections looming. Also looming on the political horizon was the concern over rampant corruption in the government. If they had done nothing Yeltsin’s party would have stood to lose, yet Putin, (Yeltsin’s successor) succeeded in focusing the medias attention on the war rather that the domestic corruption.
