A range of micro-generation technologies exists: systems which directly harness renewable energy from the natural environment - such as small wind turbines, hydro plants, solar thermal collectors or PV systems, or systems which generate heat and power form a fuel – such as internal combustion engine, Stirling engines, micro turbines, and fuel cells.
Micro CHP systems belong to the micro generation technology group where electricity and heat – at the same time or separately, are produced. Staffell subdivided the micro generation technologies in four categories: condensing boiler and furnaces, where only heat is provided, combined heat and power (CHP) technologies; small scale renewables such as solar panels and wind turbines, and low carbon heating with biomass or heat pumps (Staffell 2009).
The diverse conversion technologies that have evolved for domestic settings include reciprocating internal combustion engines, Stirling engines, low- and high-temperature fuel cells and micro gas turbines (Pehnt et al., 2005).
2.3.1 Reciprocating internal combustion engine
The reciprocating engine utilizes one or more pistons to convert internal pressure to rotating motion. In other words, a reciprocating engine converts chemical energy in fuel to mechanical power. The reciprocating engine applications are vigorous and well-built small scale CHP units similar to the ones in motor vehicles. The sizes of these reciprocating engines range from tens of kilowatts to about 10 MW and can accommodate a wide range of fuels (Orlando, 1996). al. 2009). Regardless of the environmental benefits of fuel cell micro-CHPs, their market penetration depends on capital cost and payback periods. As production is not yet developed in large scale, estimating system cost is challenging. Historic data can give an indication of cost trajectory; the average cost as of 2012 was £15,000–20,000 per kW. An estimate of the capital cost target required to present a good investment for a residential fuel cell CHP system is £280–500 per kW. However, until manufacturers reach high production rates such low costs cannot be achieved and increasing market share will require government incentives.
Table 2.1 displays the characteristics of some of the micro CHP technologies based on their techno-economic, environmental, and market prospects.
