Recommended: Women in literature

I chose to do “The Lady of the House of Love” by Angela Carter for my poster (Carter). The audience for my poster are readers of young adult literature who have read stories about Vampire such as the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyers. This audience does not have a set age range, it includes readers of young adult literature of any age. Readers who enjoy this genre enjoy dark and complex paranormal characters. My design appeals to them through the use of dark colors, a simple design which leave a lot up to the imagination, and indications that there will be paranormal characters.

My poster explores the theme of beauty. The poster visually illustrates the contrasts about beauty which are made in the story. The perfectly smooth pale skin, the black pointed and sharp nails, and the intense red rose are all at odds with each other. Red roses are a symbol of ideal beauty in The Lady of the House of Love, and they are a metaphor for the Countess who seems to embody every beauty ideal.     My favorite thing about this piece is the depiction of the New York skyline during a starry night. This is because I am in love with the city at night time. It makes me feel warm. My least favorite thing is the floral border. At first glance, it looks dumb and out of place. I did not understand the purpose of this border until further research was done on the piece of art. I do not think the artist was successful at achieving her goal. I think this because at first I didn't even notice the young girl flying above the bridge. Once I noticed her, I could not tell she was the same girl laying on the rooftop. This made the wild background not make much sense to me. If I were to do something differently about this piece, I would make the flying girl bigger, or put her into more of the focus. Also, I would do something special to show that they are the same girl. Maybe a unique outfit or something would do the job. During the time this artwork was created, Ringgold played a role in the organization of protests and actions against museums that did not show the work of women and people of color. She usually used “overly political paintings” to present her anger (Spector, Nancy). Within this work, she used a story quilt. Everyone loved it! She turned down her angry theme to show this light hearted example of a “spirited heroine”(Spector, Nancy). Women in this time period’s society loved to see a young colored girl

    Rossetti shows us the woman being painted as many different things. Although she is just a painting, the woman symbolizes how the artist views women in real life: as objects. Irony is used when the woman is painted as “a queen”(5). She is put on a pedestal in a position of power, yet she is only described as being “in [an] opal or ruby dress”(5), cementing her role as an ornament. The ruby symbolizes passion and perhaps promiscuity. Opal is a white stone that reflects many colors. White symbolizes purity; while the different colors reflected symbolize how her meaning can change, and how the artist controls her identity and can make her fit any persona he desires. The woman is also depicted as a “nameless girl”(6), indicating her identity is not important to the artist. It also shows that he does not personally know the women he’s painting, but only their looks, affirming that he bases their value off of their appearances. Lastly, the artist portrays a woman as “a saint [and] an angel”(7) and compares her to the “moon”(11), an allusion to Artemis, the goddess of virginity. In this painting, she is established as a pure virgin, which was a requirement of the time period Rossetti lived in. However, because it is one of the fantasies the artist creates, and the poem antagonizes him, this line also expresses the idea that a woman’s purity should not define her. He makes the innocent virgin and the licentious queen the only ways women can be viewed. Yet, they are the same to him. Lacking depth, their physical description is the only thing giving them any meaning. Rossetti describing the portraits conveys the idea that no matter the position in society; or what their actual personalities are like, women are just blank canvases for men to project their fantasies onto.
