Radiologic Technologist Bright, flashing red and white lights and sirens racing down the road has been my entire life the past few years. Racing to the hospital in an ambulance volunteering to take care of people in need, doing the best I can to help them is the greatest gift I have received in life. Growing up I always wanted to start a career in nursing, more specifically, a registered nurse working in the intensive care unit. However, I started college and started my prerequisites towards a nursing degree and I realized nursing might not be the best health care career for me. I also went to school and became a certified nursing assistant while deciding what career path to take. After working in a retirement community for a few months I had definitely decided nursing was not in my future. After researching a few careers and talking to multiple health care professionals, I automatically knew choosing a career in radiography was my new plan. A radiologic technologist has one of the most important jobs in the health care setting because they produce images that help diagnose injuries …show more content…
Communication is crucial in the health care setting because everyone needs to have knowledge of what is going on to help our main priority, our patient. This connects to charting correctly and giving a detailed, informative report to keep the radiologist, physician, or any other health care worker on the same page. Critical thinking is also a valuable quality because in times of distress, your patient is relying on you to stay calm and collected, never missing a beat. When problems arise, one does not quit or walk away. Instead, one must think through every situation beforehand and always be prepared for any circumstance. Communication and critical thinking are the most important qualities one needs to be prepared for every
The potential profession I am going to pursue is Radiology. Radiology deals with taking x-rays of the body and diagnosing what you find wrong. How the radiology unit works is getting a patient and having the radiologist technician take images of the body by using machines. Different types of machines such as, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET), identify all the images being taken of the human body (Phillip Costello, 2014). After the images have been taken they are sent to the radiologist to be interpreted. After being interpreted the patient is then told their diagnoses. Each of these steps involves writing in a certain form. Writing is a form of communication in the radiology unit so it must be specific and clear for someone else to interpret.
Attending Florida Southwestern State College to become an x-ray tech is a huge accomplish for me. Because I have a learning disability unfortunately I have to take remedial courses like intermediate algebra, Brush up English, and a reading course the first semester. The good thing about studying Radiology is you can switch to any type of jobs in this field. For an example, you can switch to working with MRI’s or Cat Scans if you want to try another department in the Radiology field. This specific field is for you to work with x-rays. It’s important to know the bone structure .You can work with ultrasounds to, Cat Scans, to MRI’s (Magnetic resonance imaging).
My topic that I am researching is a Radiology Technician. Basically, their job is to help Physicians take x-rays and to help them out with the readings. They also perform cat scans, ultrasounds, and radiation therapy. This article informs the reader of the job duties and occupational specialties. It tells them what they need to be able to do, such as noticing detail and clearly communicating. It also provides them with educational and preparation opportunities. The training is provided and the work environment is in mainly hospitals or, if you are in combat, a mobile field hospital (#10). They need to be physically ready, able and willing to perform their duties. They have to be very alert and vigilant in trying to study and notice the very in depth detail of the images they produce. Radiologist Technicians have a very small field of workplaces they may be at. If they are combat, such as military, they will be in what is called a mobile hospital field. Here, they may tend to and care for the soldiers who have fallen in battle because of a wound or any other difficulties within the body. They may work in a more common space, such as a physician or hospital room. Regardless of where they may work, they will always have a major part in the workforce. Now, lets talk about the equipment they use. One of the many different types of equipment they use is called a Computed Tomography, what this does is it allows technicians to produce many cross-sectioned images of the body. They can use these readings and images to comprehend the problem or problems that are associated with their patient. Next, we have the Sonography equipment,or the ultrasound equipment. This piece of equipment uses high frequency waves to view internal organs and musc...
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is the world’s largest credentialing organization that seeks to ensure high quality patient care in medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy. The ARRT certifies and registers technologists through administration of education, ethics and examination requirements.
technologist will always be in demand because they are the one's who conduct the diagnostic
Being in the position where I am able to help people and make a difference in someone's life has been a goal of mine since elementary school. Within the medical field I figured I could achieve this. I have looked into many different options that the medical field has to offer. Something about nursing just stuck out to me, but I knew I wanted something a little bit higher then just a nurse. This is why the number one career that I want to pursue is a Registered Nurse. Along with this job comes a lot of things that I need to learn and adapt to in order to be successful. I am willing to learn and put forth all my effort to insure that I can prosper in this field and know what I need to do to get there.
At that point in my life, training to be an EMT seemed to be the best way to get my foot in the door for a career in the healthcare field. However, the work was very tedious and I did not like being on the front lines of the medical field. One memory has stuck in my head throughout the past years, a call to transport an elderly woman to her dialysis appointment. Upon arrival, it was apparent that the woman was not fully coherent and was very frightened as unknown people surrounded her asking what seemed to be invasive questions. Seeing the flash of terror in her eyes as her frail hands trembled made my heart break, wishing I could take the fear and pain away from her. I knew in that moment that I did not want to have a career that contributed to someone fearing for their lives in some situations. One of the benefits of the EMT work was being in and out of the hospital, bringing patients in I was able to talk to many of the physician assistants (PA) and nurses. At that point in life, I was convinced that I wanted to go to college to be a Biology major undergrad and then move onto PA school. Although this experience definitely had its ups and downs, it reaffirmed my passion for wanting to help or save someone's life with every
My personal experiences however, do set me apart. I did not always seek a career in radiology. My first semester in college I was actually striving to be a paralegal and quickly realized that although I have a talent for paying attention to small details and great communication skills, that particular career was not the way I wanted to utilize those natural talents. This forced me to really look deep within myself and figure out what career would give me a true sense of fulfillment, success and happiness; this led me to the Nursing field. Shortly after starting towards this career path I needed to take a break to focus on becoming a
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. I believe that this is the right profession for me because I have all the qualities that a nurse should possess when
When choosing a career there are many factors that I will need to look at: will it be something I enjoy; am I just in it for the money; will the job be around years from now; how will it affect my family and me; how will I benefit from the job; and how will my personality fit in? I used to work at Conroe Regional Medical Center in the Radiology Department and watching everyone scurry around the halls was very exciting to me. I knew I always wanted to be in the medical industry I just really wasn’t sure where I would fit in just yet. Many times I have thought about going back to school, and many times I have put it off and I kept making excuses and for many reasons and many times I have put it off because I was scared. There finally came a time in my life to where I could not put it off anymore - it was now or never. In saying this I needed a job that will have a solid future and great job security. The career I have chosen is Radiology Technologist. The reason I have chosen radiology technologist is because I am a hands on person and love working with and seeing different people every day. Radiologic technologists have a great outlook in the job industry the employment is expected to grow 28 percent between 2010 and 2020. You can either work in a hospital setting which at times can be a hectic environment. Because many places offer the same imaging equipment that the hospitals have, you can now work in a clinical setting which would be a little more calm and regular set hours. In May 2010 the median yearly wage was $54,340 and can earn as high as $76,850.
RESEARCH SKILLS INTRODUCTION The route I have decided to take after gaining enough credits at Access to Higher Education (Healthcare Science) is to study Diagnostic Radiography. According to the Birmingham City University, I should at least obtain a minimum of 220 UCAS tariff points. The number of credits required will be in excess of that required to pass the Access course (66 Level 3 credits) and should include Level 3 credits in Science-based subjects, English and Study Skills. I have chosen to take one of the Allied health professions routes and want to study Radiography.
I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. Radiologic technologists are expected to give efficient patient care while following the doctor’s order to proceed with the X-ray examination. Radiology is the most important role in healthcare because with out having X-rays, the surgeons could not see inside of the patient’s body to perform surgery. Doctors can not predict what is going on inside of a patient without having an X-ray. I am interested in this being my future career because
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because of the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I wanted too. However, that dream came to a halt.

There are many legal issues a radiologist or radiologic technologist could possibly encounter. The consequences of not following the law in the imaging profession could range from being fined to losing licensure and being unable to practice. It is important for radiologists and radiologic technologists to understand the legal issues they could face since not abiding by the laws that regulate their profession could result in a loss of their livelihood. Radiologists often face legal issues concerning medical malpractice and for radiologic technologists, violations of the rules of ethics can lead to serious legal consequences.
