During times of war, the needs of the country have historically shifted. By the end of World War I, army nurses had become a critical component to the function of the military. Many of our countries women had begun serving as nurses during World War I, with as many as 21,000 army and 1,386 navy nurses (Egenes, n.d., p.16). The supply of nurses dwindled, and the demand remained increased as the war continued. As a result, the American Red Cross Department of Nursing began recruitment of additional nurses, looking beyond the traditional nursing school graduates. Patriotic women and volunteers were used where possible and increased attempts were made to assemble women with college degrees into military nursing (Egenes, n.d., p.16). By 1923, the Goldmark Report was issued, essentially stating that nursing schools needed to have educational standards, and the necessity for education to be performed at the university level (Egenes, n.d., p.19). The paradigm of nursing and its educational approach was changing to meet the needs of the nation. Nursing during the following decade endured many changes and was greatly influenced by the economical state of the country following the war, onset of the Great Depression, and rising of another world war.
Early licensure regulation had begun as early as 1901 in some states, and by 1921, nearly all of the country had adopted these laws. Egenes (n.d.) stated the purpose of this nurse practice act was to stipulate registered nurse licensure (p. 13). Although this was a landmark for the nursing profession, this law was permissive instead of mandatory. Educational standards for nursing were being implemented; public health nursing had become a major focus. The profession of nursing had entered its next phase of development (Bodie, April 2012). There was still a very real shortage of nurses as World War II began posing a very serious problem. There was a trend developing that had been demonstrated during wartime, there was an increased need for nurses in order to serve the armed forces (Whelan, 2014). By the end of World War II, it was estimated that over 77,000 nurses had joined the military, but as Whelan states in her article, this created a compromised civilian population of nurses. Once again the cycle was repeating itself.
The purpose of this essay is to explain and provide information concerning the bravery and trials our Nations World War II Nurses endured. During World War II the need for Army Nurses was so great that the Army Nurse Corps started allowing healthy willing women to join, and the United States Military found many uses for these eager ladies. The change in American society during World War II included more opportunities and a higher status for American Women Nurses with increasing educational advantages provided by the government. Complications with staffing and medical supplies during the bombings of Pearl Harbor, Schofield Hospital, and Hickam Field shows their ability to handle pressure and be useful in crisis situations. A new field training was then developed for all newly commissioned nurses, by Lt. Gen. Brehan B. Somervell the Commanding General of the Army Service Forces. December 1943 the existing and future demand of Army Nurses was decided that their were enough by the United States War Department, and all local volunteer committees were notified to stop recruiting by the Red Cross via telegram.
During the time of the American Civil War, the recruitment for nurses was in high demand. “War time activities provided opportunities for nurses to be intimately involved in the health and humanitarian care of soldiers, civilians and/or the enemy” (Judd, 3).

The topic of "ADN versus BSN" is one that has plagued the nursing profession for decades. Does a nurse’s level of education really matter? Can ADN nursing graduates perform their duties as well as BSN graduates? These are the types of questions that continue to be debated by policymakers, educational organizations and associations, and the general public. This may be because nurses are now one of the least educated health care roles when compared to other health care professions that are now requiring bachelor degrees or higher for entry. A more likely reason is undoubtedly due to the growing body of evidence suggesting that BSN graduates are more prepared when entering the workforce than their ASN counterparts. These findings have made some hospitals decide to only hire BSN prepared graduates or higher. Linda Aiken, director of the center for health outcomes and research at Penn State, recently stated "the evidence base is growing, and a number of hospitals are acting on it” (Burling, 2010). If employers prefer BSN prepared nurses, why don’t more of them offer pay differentials or other incentives to return to school? The answer to that question is still unknown. The Veterans Administration (VA) is one exception. The VA leads the country in employing the most registered nurses according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2011). There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease.
The history of nurses hadn’t developed until the nineteenth century. The first law was passed to require that nurses attain a license in 1938. After passing this law, the New York State began a movement to have certain programs to promise new standards in the field. Since the first schools were opened the training and criteria has changed tremendously. Education standards for nurses have improved in many different ways. Programs are an option throughout the country, and there are laws to back up the qualification and training standards for licensure. The nursing field is an important role as a part of the health care team, and can benefit one is so many ways. The history of nurses has changed from being a minor occupation to a major one. In today’s society people rely on nurses, doctors, and specialists more than ever. Nurses have brightened our future in the most beneficial way (Hopke 592).

For many years, the nursing shortage has been a relevant topic in today’s society. The nursing shortage is defined as a lack of trained nurses to provide care for ill individuals. Nursing schools inability to grow programs quickly enough to meet demands (Nursing Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). The shortage is not only an issue in the United States but all over the world. This problem affects a wide range of people from current registered nurses, patients, and other members of the healthcare team. According to the Nursing Association of Colleges of Nursing (Rosseter, 2014), the nursing shortage is due to the expansion of healthcare and nurses who are baby boomers beginning to retire. Long before social reforms and some physicians in the United States espoused the idea that provisions of safe nursing care was important and best delivered by persons who received a formal education in nursing. At the end of the 19th century wealthy philanthropists, nurses provided care to the sick poor patients in their homes and provided them with food and medical supplies. In 1919 a Committee for the study of Nursing Education was established to examine the state of both public health and nursing education. The committee’s published report that nurse educators receive the advanced education that is required for them. No one cared to make all the changes just some.
“In the past, nursing, secretarial work and teaching were largely the career choices for women” (Morales, 2012). Earlier, hospitals and schools were the only workplaces for nurses. Nurses were well-respected. Occasionally the implication of today will not be truly possible unless seen against the backdrop of yesterday (Members.tripod.com, 2016). Development and trends in nursing now, can be understood and explained not only by nursing’s current context but also by its past.
