When i first picked up the guitar when i was younger i was very ambitious and wanted to learn all my favorite songs and master everything to know about it. I knew that if i kept focus and practiced everyday i would accomplish my goals. A very important part of playing any instrument is your hands and fingers and i would soon learn that without them it would be difficult if not impossible to play them. I was playing pick up basketball with my friends one day and i went for the ball and jammed my thumb into the ground. Without thinking twice i continued playing thinking it was nothing more than a small sprain i continued playing. Later would i find out it the choice i made was a poor one. After feeling some discomfort in my left thumb and having difficulty bending it forward i was taken to the hospital where i had an x-ray taken showing i had broken my thumb. At first i didn't realize the magnitude of what happened until i got home later that day and picked up my guitar and realized that it was physically impossible to play with a cast on. i was d...
When I got up to bat I hit the ball but the bat vibrated down and swole up my thumb. I was completely embarrassed and immediately was out cause I was too busy freaking out. As I practiced I began to get better and better. Show off how many of you have completely embarrassed themselves in sports. I for sure can say that I do that on a regular basis.
Perhaps Guitar Bains’ defining characteristic is his firm sense of justice. From the beginning of the novel he demonstrates his devotion to morality. Guitar speaks to Milkman about a fight between Milkman and his father, he expresses the feelings of guilt he had after killing a doe: “When I got up to it…I saw it was a doe. Not a young one; she was old, but she was still a doe. I felt… bad. You know what I mean? I killed a doe. A doe, man” (Song of Solomon, 85). Guitar feels that it is wrong for the strong to fight the weak, whether be it Macon Dead striking Milkman’s mother or Guitar shooting a doe. Milkman’s sense of justice and his distain of the Caucasian race find their roots in his father’s death. After Guitar’s father is cut in half in a workplace sawmill accident, the white sawmill owner gives his mother $40 dollars and the children candy as compensation. This demonstration of the low value many whites placed on African-Americans plants a seed of hatred in Guitar. He can’t even eat sweets without becoming sick with the thought of his father’s death, as he explains to Milkman: “Since my father got sliced up in a sawmill and his boss came by and gave us kids some candy” (Song of Solomon, 61). Although his sense of justice never truly decays, as the novel progresses it is twisted and poisoned by his hatred for white people and begins to manifest itself in a far more sinister way: Milkman belongs to an organization named The Seven Days, which kills white men and women in retaliation for the often unpunished killing of blacks. “I suppose you know that white people kill black people from time to time…I had to do something. And the only thing left to do is balance it; keep things on an even keel…There is a society....
Earlier in the spring I was playing a soccer game against the South Anchorage varsity soccer team. I was playing left midfield, taking the ball up the left side of the field when the other team’s right fullback stepped up to get the ball. I cut to the right and heard a loud snap that rung in my ears. I could not stand up. Every time I tried to move my leg, waves of pain pounded from my knee. I had to be carried off the pitch. I learned a few days later
Without these types of skills it would be very hard for someone to do well in school, and would be even harder for them to become prosperous in the long run. People that play musical instruments should stick with them and keep playing them their entire life, because no matter what, it will pay off. I’m disappointed with the decision I made a few years ago when I quit piano because my cognitive skills have somewhat diminished. I also do not receive the joy I used to get from playing the piano anymore, which is one of the biggest things I miss the most from playing. Hopefully I will pick it up again sometime in the near future, because quitting the piano was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever
The summer before my fourth grade year I was attending a basketball camp at Davidson College, when in the final seconds of a scrimmage game, my ankle was kicked out from under me. I immediately fell to the ground in pain as my ankle rolled over on itself. Coaches aided me in limping off of the court and to the training room
...er instrument. A guitar requires the right way to strum it, the drums requires hand –eye coordination and the organ requires you to use your foot and hands to play. The piano through its own transformation – transformed music, and it will never be the same.
What happened? Hours later I got my answer: I had received a grade 3 concussion. While going for the volleyball I had slipped and fell. Fortunately, my descent was cushioned by my head when my body smashed against the hard gym floor. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Severe Post-Concussion Syndrome that would persist for the rest of my life. I was told that I was lucky, but as a freshman in high school, I felt anything but fortunate.
At what age did you pick up your first musical instrument and what was it?
I blacked out. Minutes later I was hearing the medic lady trying to communicate with me while she was strapping me down to the stretcher.

Having your parent get really hurt, with you being the only one to help, can be an extremely scary experience. One of the most frightening moments I have ever encountered was watching my dad saw off his thumb off. While building our new home, he continuously found new ways to injure himself, but it had never been this bad before. The sight of my dad cutting off his thumb was horrific and the ride there was just as terrifying. Though at the time, what I did not know was that this experience might have led me to the career path I am pursuing today.
Was there information or insights that helped you that you didn’t expect to learn at the outset of the course?
At the age of ten, my parents decided that I should learn how to play an instrument. In addition, they also chose which instrument I should learn, the guitar. I had no interest in learning the guitar, because all I wanted to spend my leisure time on was improvising my soccer skills. However, my parents believed soccer was a waste of my precious time, time which I should be using to focus on school and expanding my brain by taking on a difficult task, such as learning to play music. This was contrary to what I believed, but I had to do it or else my parents would be displeased. Therefore, the following week, I began taking guitar lessons.
