According to Hersey and Blanchard, “Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward goal achievement in a given situation.
Studies of leadership have produced so many theories based on trait, power influence, behavior, situation etc.
The trait theory was the most important leadership theory in the early ages. According to this theory a person must have some traits to be a leader which are inherited. These traits are intelligence, emotional ability, intense inner motivational drive, human relations attitude, fairness and objectivity, social skills, art of communication, technical skills, open minded, wisdom etc.
Situational or contingency theory appeared in response to the criticism of the trait approach. This type of leadership theory assumes that different situations call for different leadership styles. Some situational theory are more prominently appeared. The path-goal theory is one of these theories.
The path goal theory was first introduced by Martin Evans (1970). Then it was further developed by Robert House (1971). In 1996, it was again revised by Robert House.

Robert House said that, a leader can affect the performance, satisfaction and motivation of the followers by:
-offering rewards for achieving performance goals,
-clarifying paths towards the goal,
-removing obstacles to performance.
However, whether leadership behavior can do so effectively also depends on situational factors.
So, it can be said that the primary objective of the path goal theory is to suggest leaders to clarify the path to help their followers to achievement of the goal.
Critiques said that, the path goal theory is leader centered which is not suitable for an organization. The path goal theory is undemocratic in nature. The leader alone takes all the decision whether it is right or wrong which creates negative impact on followers and overall organization.
