The goal of an academic essay is to persuade the readers of an idea based on evidence. Make the best possible case for an original idea after doing extensive research. The thesis is the main point of the writing. The next step is the argument. This should give tension and persuasion. To convince any person of your case is the goal when writing your thesis. When you have facts of evidence that goes against your thesis, it is called a counterargument. The counterargument tests the persuasiveness of the idea for what you are writing.

To serve the purpose of an essay it must be written in the correct format. The introduction should start your essay. It will introduce your topic giving the framework that supports your topic. When checking your punctuation, read the essay out loud. While reading, if you have a short pause you should use a comma. If you pause for a longer period you should use a semi-colon. When using abbreviations, you should name what they stand for. When you are referring to a person, never use “that” in the sentence. Never underline and italicize the same word. Doing both these actions means the same thing. Make sure that all of your sentences have a complementary arrangement.

Stephen King writes about his childhood and young adulthood, relating stories that made him the writer he has become. Stephen King then moves into the mechanics of writing, offering advice and insight into a successful career that has worked so well for him but remains distant for thousands of others.

I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. As you might have guessed from these passages, the essay may take many forms. Most of the essays you will write during your college career, however, will be what are known as persuasive (or argumentative) essays.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
Introduction and conclusion were the most serious omission I used to make. When I wrote an essay, I simply introduced some background information on the topic at the beginning of the essay and concluded the main ideas at the end. In this English class, I have learned that a good introduction should provide a context, give the reader a clear idea of the paper’s focus, and indicate the thesis that is being advanced; an effective conclusion should not only include the main points, but also include a deep perspective on the topic. For example, in the first paragraph of my position essay, I introduce my topic “privacy matters” by allowing the reader to imagine that if we were living in a place where there was no privacy, provide the background information about privacy, and express my position on the topic. Also, at the end of my Compare/Contrast essay, I present my deep understanding of coeducation and gender bias and provide some suggestions for future actions. These two essays in my portfolio prove my great improvement in writing introduction and conclusion.
