Welfare Blocks Single Parents Who Want An Education
The welfare system and the financial aid system conflict. This conflict causes many single parents to have problems going to school. We want to be able to go to school but the new welfare reforms don't give us enough time. We need more time to finish an education.
The only way the state will help at all is if we finish our education within two years. The two years may sound adequate enough to get an education. But during those two years, we are still required to work 20 hours a week. Then, in order to finish a two-year degree or certificate within the two-year allotment, we would have to take 12 credits or sometimes up to 18 credits each semester. Taking just 12 credits would work out to be around three hours a day, Monday through Friday.
Some classes will require a lab. A lab is were we meet as a class one day a week outside of normal class requirements. During the lab time we usually work more hands on, or focus on main topics in the course. This usually requires an additional couple of hours one day a week. A lot of the college classes for a two-year certificate require a lab. By looking through the listings you'll see that with a 12 credit agenda for a semester we will most likely have an average of two labs. Two labs would add another four hours on to our week. Now we have about five hours a day, five days a week. Along with working our required 20 hours we have to find a job that is willing to work around our schedules. Then we have to schedule time for homework. With 12 credits we would need an average of two to three hours a night just to keep up with our regular work, that doesn't include studying for tests. So during the week we would have to go to school for around three hours, then would work for five hours, go home and do homework for three hours. That's already 11 hours a day. As a single mother myself I would like to spend at least a few hours a day with my son.
The Epic poem of Beowulf is a story of heroism, loyalty, ego, and fate. To be a great leader of men; a great king of the people, you must be respected and trusted. Loyalty is given to those who earn the respect and trust of their people. Beowulf was blessed with great physical strength, the pride and fearlessness of a warrior, and an equally strong command of the spoken word, which he used skillfully to his advantage. He gained the respect and trust of nearly everyone he came in contact with, largely because he possessed the characteristics of a true hero, but in the end it was his ego that sealed his fate. Although it could be said that Beowulf’s character was flawed by an enormous ego, fueled by thoughts of immortality, it is this very trait that made him an ideal hero and king.
In the epic poem, Beowulf, “The Beowulf” is depicted as the big bad guy. Though he is not seen as a big bad guy who resembles a villain, but a big bad guy who is boastful and arrogant. Beowulf is shown as a superhuman where nothing or no one can defeat him. However, the author does not show Beowulf with the same characteristics as he transitions from a good warrior to a questionable good king. During Beowulf’s new beginning of a king, he still lingers in the mindset of a warrior.
Throughout the epic Beowulf attempts to introduce himself as someone worthy of glory by boasting of his skills and deeds. These boasts show Beowulf’s glory seeking tendencies. One of these boasts
Some literary scholars maintain that Beowulf developed character flaws through the course of the long narrative poem, and that at the time of his death he was a victim of pride, avarice, selfishness and an inordinate craving for glory. The purpose of this essay is to show that he was a tremendous hero from beginning to end.
Regulators claim that Paulson’s firm was allowed by Goldman to assist in designing a Collateral Debt Obligation (CDO) financial investment which was built from specific sets of mortgage assets that were risky hence essentially set CDO to failure. While all that was happening CDO investors were not told anything about the role of Paulson nor were they told about his intentions. In the year 2007 Mr. Paulson walked home with $4 billion for having bet correctly on the collapse of housing.
In Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, the concept of the Knight of Faith is an exalted one, a unique title awarded to those whose devotion to God goes far beyond what is even comprehensible or expected for the average man, who has an aesthetic or ethical life. We are told by Kierkegaard that this Knight of Faith, when in a situation where resignation appears to be the only solution to a problem, puts his faith in what appears to be the absurd, and believes that the solution that he desires lies in God. This fuels his faith, and makes him better than the aesthetic man, who simply abandons or ignores the problem, or the ethical man, the Knight of Infinite Resignation, who accepts the problem and resigns himself to a life of despair. The Knight of Faith exists as a shining beacon of devotion to the will of God, and, according to Kierkegaard, there exist only two known examples of the Knight of Faith: Abraham, and Mary. These exemplary figures in history put their faith in God, and believed that God would provide a solution to their problems. This unconditional faith in their creator is supposed to be inspirational, and in a sense, make the reader feel incredibly pitiful and resentful of their own wavering faith. In the following paragraphs, I aim to argue that a moment of absolute faithlessness can prove to be just as powerful as a moment of pure faith, and that Mary and Abraham serve as God-given examples of an absolute faith that is inaccessible to all but a few humans who serve very specific purposes in this world. Finally, I will propose a different mode of existence, one in which a man’s free will allows him to find joy in whatever God provides for him.
There are so many students who would extremely grateful to attend any four year institution but can’t because of the lack of funds. College life can be very stressful, and the process can is very frustrating to most students the first two years. When the cost of college tuition is compared to the 21 century financial economy the cost does not make sense, because for a middle-class family it is impossible to afford sending their child to any four-year institution. It hard for students to graduate with the stress to pay-off hundreds and thousands of dollars in loans. Going to college is stressful enough without the need to worry about how we’re going to pay for it and what other costs will continue to rise with getting a degree afterwards. With the current increase of unemployment rate and the thought of going to college seems like a farfetched goal. Many people choice not to attend a four year institution, because they did receive a scholarship or enough government funding. Having a college background is very important for professional growth, it will eventually limit career opportunities. My stand point is, you may not leave college doing the same thing you began with but the life experience is endless. College experience not only gives knowledge that builds you into a better person by giving a broader erosion. With the cost of tuition increasing will hurt our generation, by causing physical and mental stress but in the end it will all pay off. Not all colleges are for the blame; some of the blame is our economy and other factors play a big roll. As students we need to be aware of all our resources offered, such as Pell Grants, and government scholarships. For example, the some states will pay for a student’s college if they graduate high school with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. There are many states that are willing to pay for all or some of college tuition only if students are willing to use
Beowulf, written between the 8th and 10th centuries, is an epic poem set in southern Sweden. The poem illustrates the Anglo-Saxon’s strong belief in the heroic code. The loyalty between the warrior and his king bound the culture together. The warrior was the ultimate hero who represented strength and courage. Beowulf, the hero in the poem, illustrates the Germanic principles of the heroic code. Through the battles and character interactions, Beowulf converges loyalty, strength, courage and forgiveness into the hero archetype.
Beowulf is an epic poem that, above all, gives the reader an idea of a time long past; a time when the most important values were courage and integrity. The only factors that could bestow shower fame upon a person were heroic deeds and family lineage. Beowulf, as the paradigm of pagan heroes, exhibited his desire to amass fame and fortune; the only way to do so was to avenge the death of others. This theme of retribution that is ever present throughout the poem seems to color the identities of its characters.
Not all students could afford the cost of college. The minimum salary with a high school diploma is $19,680. As for college, the average tuition costs for colleges in Oregon state is $ 6,780 for in-state and $ 20,709 for out-of-state. All the money a worker makes is split to pay state taxes, federal taxes, personal income taxes, sales tax, other taxes, mortgage and personal needs. How much is left from the check? Not to mention, students come from low-income families. Everyone is aware of the cost for college is skyrocketing and sometimes students are told to stay home and help provide for the family instead. Parents discourage their children because they know that they can never be able to afford it. It’s a shame that parents discourage their children because of money issues when in other countries college is free. Some developing countries have free college, while the U.S is a developed country and charges for education. Everyone has potential, why should they be held back because of money?
Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are common ways for small companies to grow and expand by increasing their availability of capital. The Initial Public Offering started seeing a strong increase in popularity in the late 1990's. As a result of the growing popularity resulting in the dot com explosion, the term "IPO" became a household name. In order to understand how IPOs work, its best to first know how IPOs are created.
Education is extremely important to me. I have been fortunate enough to have positive experiences in school and the means to pursue higher education. However, some people didn’t have this option, felt it was unavailable to them, or just chose not to pursue it at the time. However, more and more people are deciding to go back to school. In fact, NBC states that in 2009, 40% of all graduates were 25 years old and over - 17% of those being 35 years old and over. Going back to school isn’t easy. The cost is an obvious concern, but so are the hours that may cut into the time one spends at work or with his or her kids.
The downfall of the US Public Education system is very concerning to me. A number of children are leaving the school system without the proper tools for them to be successful and productive. Over the years, schools have been victims of budget cuts; therefore, they are no longer able to supply children with sufficient and basic needs for success. There are several factors other than budget cuts that contribute to young adults leaving school without the proper tools for success.
In other words, they could go to college for better education. The cost of higher education is substantially growing in the recent years, which include both state universities and private universities. Due to a rapid increase in tuition fees, some young students drop out of college because they are not able to find a job to pay off their loans after graduation. However, it is difficult to accept those high tuition fees for low-income families. Most of low-income families have more than two children, which cause a financial burden for the families. In the article “Higher Education’s Coming Crisis” Robert Zaller states that “President Obama has fired a shot across the bows of higher education in warning that if college costs continue to go up, government subvention will go down.” which means if college do not cut tuition fees, more students cannot go to college. Even if some students who graduate from high school would prefer to make money early rather than achieve a college degree. The loan to students could effectively be solved the tuition fee issue, which could contribute to completing their college education first and then paying the cost after
Today, it is not easy for one to obtain a high-paying job without a college education. In addition to the importance of the actual degree and earning money, college is a critical period of time in life for developing critical thinking, time management and communication skills that set the stage for building a solid career. Further, relationships made in college often will open the doors to new opportunities and further advancement. Unfortunately, college is very expensive and the challenge of paying for it can seem insurmountable to teens from financially-challenged homes. However, college can be the mechanism to break the cycle of low income in a family.
