In the article, “A Food Manifesto for the Future”, Mark Bittman makes his claim on how our American diet is unhealthy and unsafe towards our bodies and the environment as well. Within his piece, he includes multiple suggestions that could be implemented towards the foundation of a healthier, and safer diet. Within all these recommendations, Bittman states that, “When people cook their own food, they make better choices.” I decided to argue for this proposal, after personal experiences that I have had recently where I was able to see the difference between cooking at home, and eating out. Within Bittman’s piece, he states that we should, “encourage and subsidize home cooking”, which at first I did not understand how exactly our nation could subsidize home cooking. Immediately, I thought of individuals being granted free groceries to make these home meals, which seemed impossible when I then recognized that this part of his argument is already being implemented in many communities in our nation. Although individuals are not leaving boxes of fresh groceries on our doorsteps, many individuals are being granted the opportunity to receive free groceries, or less expensive meals. Last week, I decided to go to the community event that the University of Arizona holds monthly called, Campus Pantry. Campus Pantry is a non-profit organization that distributes free food staples at no cost for students and staff as they attempt to reduce food scarcity in our Wildcat Community. This is just one example of the different resources that are available to different communities, while other examples vary to programs such as community food banks, or the food stamps program for lower income individuals to purchase food at no cost. ...ics, and my social life too. My go to meal would always be a Chick-fil-A sandwich with fries and water because of the fact that it was not too expensive, and it was convenient. It was not until this week that I decided to dedicate some time, and make my meals. Soon, I was able to see the difference as I was consuming more vegetables and feeling full without that disgusting guilt feeling many of us have after eating fast food. After changing my eating habits and reading the research and scholarly articles about the difference, I am for this recommendation Bittman has of cooking our own food for a healthier, and safer diet is one we should all strive for. Although there will be some difficulties with this transition at first, after being able to personally push through, I can state that this recommendation is a feasible one that any individual can accomplish.
