The television network PBS aired a documentary on Frontline named Generation Like. The documentary shows the lives of teens and twenty somethings interacting with social media. It explains how our generation, The Millennials or Digital Natives, care about online likes and how we are our own publicity team. We unknowingly help corporations and franchises sell products just by liking it on Facebook, reblogging it on Tumblr, or retweeting on Twitter. The documentary aired on 18 February 2014 and can be considered digitally outdated because Facebook is not as popular as it used to be in my age group. Generation Like is very informative regarding how corporations get money off of likes and our relationship with technology but it does not portray …show more content…
In an article by Neil Howe, “How the Millennial Generation is Transforming Employee Benefits”, he states “The Millennial Generation shows far more interest than older generations in a broad spectrum of employee benefits to protect them from various life risks” (8). We learned from our parents and grandparents the horrors of being financially insecure. This generation witnessed the 2007-08 financial crisis and how it affected their family. Seeing that, affected the generation to take a conservative new approach to financial, medical and other life risks and they want their employers to provide benefits that protect them from risks (Howe 9). The need for a safety net is strong for this generation along with being concerned with retirement. The survey for Ameritrade found that 56% of workers under the age of 35 are making regular contributions toward their retirement and they are saving in both their 401(k)s and their individual retirement accounts than any older age bracket before (Howe …show more content…
But the documentary lacked representation of non-Latino minorities, the college attending students, and the people in the workforce changing employee benefits. There’s Millennials that make profit from being online like Tyler Oakley and other YouTubers but there’s also average everyday Millennial 's in school and going into more traditional careers. Facebook isn’t as popular in 2015 but the internet and social media is a part of the millennial generation and will be a part of generations after. More jobs in advertisement will most likely come from social media like TVGLA. There will be more studies on this generation because we are the biggest since the baby boomers. The Millennials are the future and will shape the U.S economy. We are more than just digitally obsessed or self-absorbed we’re more accepting and ready to organize protests for
The push for Congress to pass legislation protecting the rights of employees and their retirement was inevitable. Retirement plans are extremely important for all working individuals. Simon Sinek, in the YouTube video “The Millennials in the Workplace Interview”, states that Millennials need to learn balance with their social media and physical life. According to Sinek, a millennial is a person born approximately between 1984-2000. Throughout the Interview, Simon is very zealous, empathetic, apologetic, and humorous. He uses metaphors, They Say I Say, diction, and parallel structure.
SUBJECT: An analysis of two articles about the impact of multiple generations on the workplace
Three in five millennials have been saving more than 5% of their income, and have the best budgeting system. Millennials are investing in their futures by saving money for retirement and saving in general. (Chase Bank, 2017) Another survey was done by the Schwab Modern Wealth Index. The survey included 1,000 Americans between the ages of 21-75 and how they managed their money. Schwab was mainly concerned with four areas: goal setting and financial planning, saving and investing, staying on track, confidence in reaching financial goals. On a scale of 0 to 100, the different generations were analyzed. Baby boomers came in with a score of 49, generation X had 45, and millennials scored a
Millennials are well on their way to redefining the “American Dream.” In a world where they have to constantly exercise critical thinking to financially survive the debts the average Millennial life incurs, suggesting that their reluctance to fall into the status quo will hurt them is a stagnant, inflexible view. It only hurts those entrenched in a narrow worldview limited to one accepted lifestyle and standard of living. To this life, Millennials are thoroughly disillusioned. They’re causing all these economic ‘problems’ because they aren’t buying into the hazy suburban complacency that the traditional dream represents. It’s not just that it costs too much to get there, it’s mostly that it’s hardly achievable. Contemporary high school is less of a system for education as it is an Olympic triathlon. Students must jump through every well-nigh arbitrary hoop, competing against each other for the most scholarship money based on the right opinion said in the right words. Who was in the most meaningless clubs at the same time? Who happened to attend a school with the most extra-curricular activities or AP courses? When school – that
Retirement Retirement seems to be one of the most often overlooked areas of people’s future plan. Simply because it seems so far away, it is an area that is subject to procrastination. People are expected to live longer now than ever before, this is another reason why young adults and teenagers are not worried about saving for their retirement. The baby boom generation, the seventy seven million people born between 1943 and 1960, face an entirely different retirement plan. As they began to retire, people are starting to think that there will be no money left and this will turn into a crisis. What will happen when seventy-seven million baby boomers begin to want the money they paid in… but it is not there? Retirement provisions such as Social Security, IRA’s, and 401k’s are there to help when you are deciding how to save money. Social Security started a long time ago, in the 1930’s, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. He was elected president in November 1932. By March there were over thirteen million people that were unemployed, and almost every bank was closed. Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed a sweeping program to being recovery to business and to agriculture and relief to those who were in fear of losing their farms and homes to being unemployed. In 1935, recovery was slowing arriving, but more And more people were turning against Roosevelt’s New Deal program. This led Roosevelt to a new program of reform, which we know today as social security.
To be considered a millennial, an individual has to be born within the years 1982-1999. I’m considered a millennial myself (1997). With the advancement of technology, Generation Y has the upper hand automatically on any prior generation. Generation Y also has an advantage because of the way they insist on getting what they want. Instead of Generation Y adapting to the work environment, the workplace will have to change in order to retain young talent. The workplace will have to adapt because according to Matchar, the American workforce will be 75 percent Generation Y workers by

Social change can be defined as transforming in the beliefs, social interactions, organization, and structure of society. Social change occurs over time, sometimes change, and even if its good can create problems and challenges which confronts the status quo. The baby boomers create societal challenges that influence change. When there is a sudden decrease in the population it brings implications for society and social change. If there are not enough people in an area to fulfill the roles social institutions must change. Baby boomers also can influence the behaviour of how other younger generations will behave through positive and negative stimuli as they are a charismatic leaders. The baby boomers correlates to increased anxiety and depression
Popular opinion tells us that millennials are lazy people with no drive to do anything because they see their destination instead of their journey. I would like to believe that this millennial behavior stretches not only from 1980 to 2000, but instead this attitude is being gradually instilled in the new generations as well, leading them to boring and “un-impactful” lives, which is what most millennials do. This is a shame because every millennial and likewise kid wants to grow up to be Superman or Neo from “The Matrix” and change the world in similar dramatic fashions, and this isn’t necessarily our fault, it’s the fault of our parents, and perhaps the fault of a failed society.
The succeeding paragraphs will explain how innovations in employee benefits can improve the overall competitive compensation strategy of the organization. In order to maintain their competitive edge, companies need to fully understand that as the needs of their employee’s change, so does their benefit plans. Companies need to find innovative ways of engaging employees that encourage and support their commitment and improve their performance.
A tv package can give you 1,000 channels, but if a family only watches two hundred of the channels then they are wasting money on something that they do not use. This is the same idea millennials have with benefits. According to an article called “The millennials require a new approach to benefits,” there was a study done named the Met Life study. This study was done to see what benefits millennials are looking for. “96% of millennials said that they want comprehensive healthcare. 58% said that they want more training and development. Along with this study other important factors over 50% were flexible hours and retirement funding.”(business management daily) These benefits show that millennials know what they need for the future. They want training and development that is going to improve their performance because they seem to be used to the idea that they must do their best and try their hardest. Training and development may help improve the workplace and help them with their personal goals as well. Also, some millennials have grown up during the recession and know how important preparing for the future can be. They have considered this because one of the top qualities they are looking for is retirement funding. Along with these percentages another proven benefit that millennials are looking for in a job is flexibility. Part of this may be due to parents trying to balance work and
There is a generation that is 80 million strong who is the start of a new millennium. The people of this generation are called the Millennials. Many think of them as closeminded, faulty and not fit to run the major cooperation’s of the world someday, yet the true identities of this group are just starting to be revealed. Millennials can easily and thoroughly understand the new advances in technologies. They are also the most diverse and open minded generation yet. They show a lot of potential and could someday change the world for the better. A writer for Time magazine, Joel Stein, does a wonderful job describing the millennials for who they truly are in his article “The New Greatest Generation.” While Stein agrees with Twenge in that millennials show faults, he maintains that their faults have potential to make them the next greatest generation. Despite the negative connotations millennials receive, they often have the ability to be resourceful with the technology, open-minded to the diversities the world displays and have a lot of potential.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
The Millennials generation is widely known to be “entitled, narcissistic, self-interested, unfocused and lazy” as Simon Sinek (2016) said in his interview on Inside Quest about the Millennial generation. Essentially, he is saying that Millennials have issues that will cause them problems for developing in the real world. I agree that Millennials are not prepared for the real world and they do have issues. Sinek (2016) starts off by asserting the Millennial generation is unprepared for the world because of by four categories parenting, technology, impatience, and environment.
