Being a dentist can be everybody’s dream job and it is most certainly mine. However, before starting this project, I thought of dentistry as very boring and fairly disgusting. After all, dentists clean teeth, deal with dirty gums, and have to smell bad breath. I knew that it is a great job financially but was not sure about any other benefits. I told myself that the only reason I would choose this career was for the money. Many people are scared of going to a dentist just as I was. I was afraid for visitations because of the drills and needles they use; I kept thinking what if they messed up and poked a hole in my mouth? In addition, I knew that getting braces or cosmetic improvements would be expensive. Cost is one of the biggest reasons people why dislike going to the dentist. After much researching, I applied to a dental program. I realized that Dentistry is not a bad idea, and people often exaggerate their fears. USnews reported that it was the number one job in 2013 with the average salary in the United States as of 2012 set at a comfortable $145,240, and the highest earning taking in over $187,999. Not only is the pay exceptional, but this occupation is well respected in the healthcare community and there is always a demand for dental care. No day is the same and you can set up a flexible schedule that suits your work. I think the most rewarding of all is the smile of satisfaction on your patients face. These are all great reasons why I would like to be a dentist that I did not think of before.

It’s satisfying that there is a mutual respect for everyone which increases with each procedure. It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. You will not have a relationship with all the patients but usually after a procedure you get to know and really your patient. This job involves both mental and physical labor, which some may cringe at. However, I think that it’s great because it keeps things interesting. Lastly I think the most important reason is the financial stability that this career offers. I have access to many opportunities that others do not through this profession. I can choose to live in a nice neighborhood, go on relaxing vacations and possibly send my children to prestigious universities.
