A couple things the Hooker Electrochemical Corporation should have thought about was the respect for persons model and confidentiality. Respect for person means that actions will protect/respect human’s moral agency (Harris, Pritchard, Rabins, James, Englehardt, 1995). At the time, only the School Board knew about the toxic chemicals. However, the corporation should have informed all the citizens so they could make their own logical decisions whether to stay or relocate to another area. It’s definitely crucial to not hold information especially when citizen’s health and safety are at risk. As a result, many people reported that chemicals were entering their houses, women would report miscarriages, children would have high percentages of birth defects, and people were developing signs of illnesses such as asthma and epilepsy (Geneseo). Not only that, but 33% of people living in Love Canal had chromosome damage (Logan, 2012). Once all the facts started to unfold people quickly realized they were in danger of their health and funds were made in order to move a myriad of families to other locations. The Corporation could have analyzed two approaches for respect for persons: golden rule and rights. The Corporation could have used the golden rule approach and simply all this would have been prevented. The golden rule approach is when one uses the reversibility test (What would I think of the decision if I switched roles). Without a doubt, the Corporation would have understood the actions they had performed were unjust and unfair if they put themselves in the citizens that were affected position. In this country, journalism plays a crucial role in our society, so when engineers and companies ends up in the news, it means that their actions had a social or environmental repercussion; consequently, because of Hooker’s lack of professionalism, an entire community was exposed to carcinogens that ended up affecting the locals and the unborn; as a result, by 1978, many newspapers and TV news reported Hooker’s activities (Zuesse, 1981); in fact, Hooker’s actions were so devastating that even today there are news being reported occasionally about the aftermath of the situation; failing completely the publicity test. Whenever engineers or companies are weighting decisions, they must use ethical tests to measure and describe the effect of their decisions in the community and their profession.
