Using this framework, I was able to assess my strengths and areas of development as a manager. One of the six dimensions of leadership, which is supervising, that I believe is an area for development for me as a manager. There are many dynamics that are vital to effectively display desirable attributes of a good supervisor. For starters, learning how to implement interventions when interacting with staff to help their clients. Another responsibility one has as a supervisor is to nurture the growth of the staff and discover the strengths in staff so they can use it in areas for development. 2. Budgeting Another dimension of leadership, which is budgeting that I believe, is an area of …show more content…

Leaders accomplish this by inspiring vision, offering direction, and supporting individual and collective action in order to obtain mutually valued results.” ("Social Work

All organisations require management and management in turn, require a certain level of leadership abilities. The long-term success of an organisation depends on its ability to take advantage of the competences and knowledge of its employees. In an increasingly competitive environment, organisations must motivate its employees and encourage initiative within the organisation. This new organisational climate requires more than a traditional manager and organisations must find ways to develop leadership skills in order to increase effectiveness and to stay competitive. In any organisation leadership is often argued to be a critical factor for success or failure. It can also be said that a leader can be a manager but a manager is not always necessarily a leader (Gandz, Crossan, Seijts & Reno 2014). It is therefore vital for organisations to recognise traits and techniques that defines a success...
Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective leader one must demonstrate with a high level of confidence, “even if I’m unsure of myself, I have to be ready to stand by my decision and carry it out.” Although, she also stated a competent supervisor must also be able to accept when they are wrong. Ms. Geis provides supervision for 15 direct care workers in the programs and finds “That’s a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives to sort through.” Therefore, she finds difficult people are not easy to work with. From an administrate role, she states, “You can not let it consumes you and affect you negatively.” Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective manager when working with complex individuals one must learn how to use their strengths and adapt the work environment. “You find what they are really good at and place them in the best role that uses their strong points.”
Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results.

A strategic plan is a tool that delivers guidance in achieving a mission or goal with maximum proficiency and control for an organization. Strategic planning is used to transform and revitalize organizations. The plan helps provide an inclusive understanding of opportunities and challenges both internally and externally for the organization. The plan delivers an assessment of the strengths and limitations that are realistic within the company. A well-developed strategic plan will offer a comprehensive approach and empowerment for the stakeholders involved. It is an opportunity for learning and understanding priorities that will drive the business to succeed. Jones (2010), describes how in health care organizations, strategic plans characteristically concentrate on operational and organizational goals such as when to obtain new technology, how to meet competitive challenges, and what staffing, tools, or facilities are needed to ensure organizational survival. The mission and value statements are significant in determining the quality of a strategic initiative. Forcing the organization to look toward the future creates proactive objectives in which both short-term and long-terms plans and goals are necessary in order to succeed.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
If asked what strategic planning is one could interpret it as simply a road map that can guide the organization in the right direction. It is very unlikely that an organization would know which direction to take without a sense of direction. Managers are faced every day with decisions that have a major impact on the direction the organization must take, therefore, strategic planning can play an important role in guiding managers in the right direction. In other words strategic planning is a tool that management can use to give them a sense of direction that will guide them in doing a better job and to ensure that all the members of the organization are working toward the same goals
