A comprehensive approach to literacy instruction has two components, reading and written expressive language. As students learn about reading, they reinforce ideas about written expressive language; furthermore, when students learn about written expressive language, they are reinforcing ideas about reading. Another factor to a comprehensive approach to literacy is reading. Reading is the process that involves the translation of symbols on a printed page into words and understands the word meaning. The translation of symbols is called decoding. There are several skills to help children decode words; they are: instant word recognition, sound/symbol correspondence, structure analysis, and context. The knowledge to understand the word meaning is called comprehension. Some skills to help aid comprehension are: oral language, world knowledge, visualization, and inner dialogue. When reading, children need to have good fluency, and phonemic awareness. One more factor to a comprehensive literacy approach is written expressive language. Written expressive language has two components; mechanics and composition/creativity. Mechanics involve the “how do you put your thoughts on paper?” A good writer has a defined knowledge of: sentence structure, paragraph structure, spelling, and handwriting. Composition/creativity involves the “how do you compose and organize for writing?” This is similar to comprehension because it includes oral language, world knowledge, visualization, and inner dialogue. The teaching of literacy includes a balance of reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Literacy development is a social endeavor that provides a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners. Literacy instruction needs to be taught in an authentic literature experience that includes a balance of reading and writing to the students and by the students with a blend of small group, whole group, and individual instruction. Teachers need to reflect practice and stay current with the best practices to continually assess what is working and what is not working.
