The common theme throughout chapter fourteen is to make sure that parents are involved in the classroom environment and the literary development of their children. Learning starts at home, and it is essential for a child to have some type of home environment that fosters language development. The lack of a school-home connection creates a learning barrier for the student. It is important for parents to be involved in the classroom environment and involved in their child’s learning. School-home connections are not built overnight, it takes time and effort. Some parents may work multiple jobs, some parents are stay at home parents, and some students may be in the care of other family members. No matter the situation, chapter fourteen reiterates the importance of focusing on the child’s needs, and the importance of literary development. The importance of school-home connections is to accommodate the parent’s needs and schedule, with the intention of bettering the student. I value the ideas that this chapter proposes to involve parents in classrooms in multiple ways to foster learning.
The first step in fostering school-home connections is to make sure that teachers understand the student’s home environment and culture. Students who have an unhealthy home environment usually do poorly in their school environment. I believe that this statement plays into the ideas of equity and equality. Sometimes teachers may have to go above for other students or provide them with extra resources to ensure that all students are equal. The second step is setting up learning communities, which allows parents to connect with other parents and involves direct contact with the teacher. Although aesthetically pleasing newsletters, telephone calls, and emails are all good forums of communication, physical encounters spark thoughtful conversations and interactions. Parents and teachers get to know each other better in-person and school-home connections can began to blossom. School-home connections are essential for a child’s success. It is important for teachers to educate parents on the importance of being involved in their child’s school environment and it is essential for parents to be involved in their child’s learning and literacy development. Fostering school-home connections leads to a better school environment for the student and leads to enhanced literacy development.
