A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer
A book called A Child Called “It” is based on real life experiences of the author, Dave Pelzer. This book is not easy to read, as it describes one of the worst cases of child abuse in California. The author is telling us his whole story; from his happy childhood in a complete family, through brutal abuse caused by his mother, and finally to be rescued by his teachers.
It is hard to believe that anyone could abuse his or her child as Pelzer describes in his book. His mother, an alcoholic, was abusing him from the age of four until he was twelve years old. Actually, it all started innocently and without the beatings. The reason was quite understandable at first. The author said that he was a loud child who was lucky to be caught while misbehaving; but, soon it escalated into mental abuse and brainwashing. His mother´s behavior also changed in more ways during that time. She showed signs of depression, by lying down on a sofa all day long, drinking, and not taking care of herself, etc.
Pelzer´s father, a fireman, was not aware of those things in the beginning. That is to say, she tried to conceal her behavior toward Pelzer at first. However, when he was trying to hide under the protection of his father, she started to involve her husband in the abuse, too. His father was not active and he usually just watched, although he disagreed for the reasons his son was punished. At the beginning, he tried to help him secretly, but later he started to blame his son for his unsuccessful marriage and the whole situation. All this resulted in Pelzer´s father leaving his family.
While reading this moving story, readers have to have a feeling that the neighbors, teachers, doctors and child protection agency had...

It must be understood, David Pelzer was seeking safety at school from the very beginning, and he even fell in love with one of his teachers. He thought that by being good at school, he can get a praise from his mother. Obviously, when his mother laughed at him and punished him for being good at school, he stopped being interested in studying, as he did not see the sense in it. Nevertheless, the school was still his safe place, where he was not abused by his mother.
In conclusion David Pelzer was able to survive even though his mother did not offer him a nurturing and safe environment. It is not clear why his mother chose him from among his siblings. It may be as a result of her unspecified mental illness.
David Pelzer was exposed to various forms of abuse, ranging from mental to physical. Remarkably, he was successfully able to evolve himself into a healthy man.
