To a dentist the most important job is to “make a patient feel safe and provide them with the best care possible” (Fasbinder) There are many other factors to the job. It is imperative that a dentist assess any situation, use critical thinking, practice good judgment, listen to his/her patient, and lead his staff quickly and effectively. A dentist must look out for the patient above all else. Dentists must make a diagnosis, avert, and treat problems with teeth and oral tissue. When two dentists were questioned about their decision to enter the medical field, one stated, “Dentistry has been a part of my family for many generations my father was a dentist his father was a dentist and now I can proudly say that I’m a dentist above all else I love helping and educating the general public.” (Fasbinder) The other responded, “ Out of all the branches of medicine I could have entered, I chose dentistry for one reason: the patients, I love entering my practice daily and seeing new and old patients I feel an immense sense of pride knowing that when they smile I helped improve their features” ( Jarrod).
Decay and diseases involving teeth and gums have been around since the beginning of mankind. Archaeologists have discovered the skulls of the Cro-Magnon people showing signs of severe tooth decay. The most primitive writing involving tooth disease was an ancient Sumerian text that dates back to 5000 B.C. accusing “tooth worms" of digging into teeth thus forming the characteristic holes of tooth decay as it is known today (Hayes). The ancient Greeks, Roman, and Egyptians used various remedies for toothaches, as well as tooth extraction. In the Middle Ages dentistry was practiced by craft workers, jewelers and barbers (Wil...

Did you know that a dental hygienist could make a slightly large mistake without asking a simple question? Well they can, the most common question is if their patient would like one or more crown placed in there mouth at a time. In order to succeed as a dental hygienist everyone is required to go to either a two or four year college and major in dental hygiene. Many people believe that it is easy to be a dental hygienist because they think that all that is required to do is clean teeth, but its actually quite difficult. Making sure the patients have excellent oral care is very important
Dental Hygienists do a great deal more than what is recognized. They are a part of the preventive oral health profession, that provides educational, clinical,
I currently attend Tennessee State University as a freshman. I plan on majoring in Dental Hygiene. I am the first to graduate and attend college in my family so of course everybody has high expectations from me. My mom and dad sacrificed a lot for me to attend school and get a good education and they taught me that without education you really can’t do much with your life. I want to have a good career and a good degree so I can be successful in life. I want to make my parents happy and very proud of the young lady they have raised. My father’s dream has always been for me to major in Dental Hygiene because of how successful I can be. And my dream has always been to make my dad (my inspiration and my role model) happy. When I started off trying to decide my major I had a very hard time because I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to choose a major that I couldn’t really do much with or find a good job with. I asked my dad for help and he told me that this major would fit me perfectly and we looked up more information about it and we looked up the salary for it too and that’s when I knew I had found my major.
All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
When most people think of dental hygienists, the first and only thing they think about it cleaning and whitening teeth. However, that is mainly what dental hygienists do, but they also learn to do a lot more than that. According the occupational outlook handbook, hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health. As explained on American Dental Association, the dental hygienist...

Dental assistants mainly help as BLS states, “Dental assistants provide support to dentists as they work on patients.” (“Dental Assistants.”). Dental assistants help the doctor work on the patient's mouth. Sometimes the doctor tells the assistants what to do and the assistant does most of the work and the doctor will come back after the work is done to check the patient's mouth.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
Some people may wonder, why dentistry? Dentistry is often viewed as maybe boring, or an odd profession to aspire to go into. As I have grown up I have always known that I at least would like to go into the health field, and help people In any way that I can, however
Cosmetology has led me to dentistry. At fifteen, to better support my family financially, I pursued a cosmetology license. For two years, I balanced school, a part-time job and a 1500-hour cosmetology course. Shortly after becoming a licensed esthetician, I was promoted to a team manager and I trained others in technique and use of equipment, distributed work, made quick decisions in a fast-paced environment and accommodated customer complaints.

Knowing the origins of career is key to understanding the importance of why it began. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dentistry's ancient origins began in 500 B.C. with the belief of "tooth worms as the cause of teeth decay." Later down the road in 1700 – 1550 B.C., an Egyptian text reveals toothache remedies. Oral cavity issues were provident in very early time of the human race. As a result, oral cavity issues continued therefore so did research which inspired Hippocrates and Aristotle
