The ultimate goal for myself, and the initial reason for studying with the Distance Learning Centre, is to become an Operating Department Practitioner(ODP). The role will involve working within operating theatres inside hospitals to support patients throughout their time during certain operations, or ‘periopertive journey’ (Health Education England, 2014b). I came to the decision to focus on making this my chosen career in November 2012 through word of mouth and a significant amount of research. The profession carries an extensive list of positives and negatives, along with how well it fits my personality and previous experiences; despite never working within the health sector previously. When an ODP job in advertised the prospective candidate must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council(HCPC) (Health Education England, 2014f); the regulatory body set up to maintain a register of health care professionals from certain roles within the NHS (Health Education England, 2014g). Before I am entitled to register with the HCPC I must meet a criteria designed to ensure I meet the necessary standards for the role I intend on practicing in (Health Education England, 2014g). The best way to satisfy these standards is by completing an approved programme that automatically entitles me to registration and put me one step further to becoming an ODP (Health Education England, 2014g). An approved programme for an ODP registration would either be a Diploma of Higher Education or a Bachelor of Science degree course; with the latter being a relatively new option that has begun to be offered by universities (Health Education England, 2014g). From my research, I have discovered there is plenty of support available to overcome the challenge of things not going as planned (Day in a Life, 2014). Despite the challenges I will be faced with as an Operating Department Practitioner, and the difficulties I may face on the journey to qualification, I have learned from my research that a lot the experiences I have gained in other sectors outside of the health profession will only serve to benefit me. I have vast experiences with working people, in a variety of environments, not to mention the capability to work in different areas as when I am needed; something I believe can be transferred to the role of the Operating Department Practitioner.

The object of this essay is to discuss the role of the Assistant Practitioner. How it has emerged; how it fits into the structure and skill mix of the NHS workforce and the effect it has had on that structure. It will also outline the principles of accountability and statutory regulations that govern the day to day practice of the role.
I have been looking at pursuing a career within the Health Care Profession for many years now, and whilst I was researching opportunities I discovered the Operating Department Practice (ODP) course at Northumbria University. I attended an open day, and after speaking to the course tutors and students, It has only strengthened my desire to become one. I have attended a Cardio Theatre visit which was interesting and informative as well as visiting the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) website and the College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP) website to explore the role further.

This experience will definitely influence my future practice; my action plan would be using those teaching strategies in preparing students to face the clinical environment, to ensure optimal patients’ health outcomes and it helps to build a competent and independent clinician.

The scope of practice for the Surgical Nurse is not for just anybody. In order to better serve the patient, the employer, and the nurse him/herself, the nurse should fully understand the demands this role has and make an informed decision. With this paper, we were able to show the reader what it takes to be a Surgical Nurse, the demands this role has, salary range and job availability, pros and cons, and why the patient must take number one priority. The research we have provided is just the doorway opened to the future for nurses looking for a potential specialty in this practice. There are many roles a nurse can fulfill so the best advice we can offer is to do personal research in the role of interest and always make a well rounded, informed decision.

I have in all my undergraduate study been told what to do as student. All the information, tasks and assignment were delivered and dictated by the teachers in charge of the subject or the modules, and as students I had to follow the instruction giving, however, since I came to Cardiff university to do my master degree on health care science, the attitudes of the teachers and the way the modules structured which was different form the way I used to and had influence (presage) in my view the way we teach our Operating Department Practitioners ODPs and students nurses coming to the operating theatre for their post qualification internal ship and hoping that I will introduce a change in order to assist new ODPs and nurses graduates in order to help them building their capabilities to work independently and safely, the aim of the internal ship period is to produce competent theatre practitioners in term of skills, knowledge, confidence and learning responsibility Quinn et al. (2007). Therefore a lot of effort must be utilised to help them in the transition period form students to qualified staff (Simelane et al.1997).

I went to the operating room on March 23, 2016 for the Wilkes Community College Nursing Class of 2017 for observation. Another student and I were assigned to this unit from 7:30am-2:00pm. When we got their we changed into the operating room scrubs, placed a bonnet on our heads and placed booties over our shoes. I got to observe three different surgeries, two laparoscopic shoulder surgeries and one ankle surgery. While cleaning the surgical room for the next surgery, I got to communicate with the nurses and surgical team they explained the flow and equipment that was used in the operating room.
