What Is Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Shielded metal arc welding is a manually operated welding process in which an electric arc is used to generate the heat required for welding. Shilded metal arc welding (SMAW) also known as stick welding, is a method used to join various material in a variety of applications and job locations. “SMAW is one of the oldest and most popular methods of joining metal. Moderate quality welds can be made at low speed with good uniformity” (“Welding”). It is one of the most basic and versatile welding process. “Companies rely upon its portability while veteran welders trust in its reliability” (Carlson). The basic idea of shielded metal arc welding is to join two pieces of metal by mixing a filler metal with your base metal. It is a very flexible, portable, and versatile welding process. It is very flexible on how thick of materials it can work with. Additionally, it is very portable because it only requires a generator for power. “Finally, it’s quite versatile because it can weld many different types of metals, including cast iron, steel, nickel and aluminum” (“Welding”).
In other welding processes you must use a shielding gas to protect the weld zone from the surrounding atmosphere. When using shielded metal arc welding you use a consumable filler metal rod which is covered with a flux. “SMAW is a welding process that uses a flux covered metal electrode to carry an electrical current. The current forms an arc that jumps a gap from the end of the electrode to the work” (“Welding’). This arc creates enough heat to melt both the electrode and the material(s). As the arc moves, the mix solidifies to become one piece.
The flux is burned off during welding and creates a shield around the weld protect...

...nd. Some electrodes have a greater diameter than others, therefore weighing more and costing more. The third way is how much of the material is actually deposited into the weld. This is determined by how much you lose between spatter, slag, some of the electrode becoming gas, and bare metal studs that cannot be burnt down.
Electric power cost is one of the last ways in determining your overall price for shielded metal arc welding. This determination is relatively minor, but can become more significant when large amounts of welding are being done. There are different ways of breaking down the electric power cost. One of the first ones is how much welding is being done. Another factor is the amount of current being used during your welding procedures. Also something to think about when pricing your electric power cost is to check the efficiency of your power source.

Mechanical Welding And Gas Metal Arc Welding Essay

- Basic Welding Processes Some of the very basic processes of welding include: Gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and oxyfuel gas cutting. These processes are so unique in certain ways that it is easy to forget about all the dangers that come with welding. When there is a finished weld that is so beautiful from a process that is not really desirable, that is when it is easy to forget. “Oxyfuel gas cutting (OFC) is a process used to cut metal by rapidly oxidizing it.” (Bowditch, Bowditch and Bowditch 259)....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding]

Gas Welding : Pipeline Welding Essay

- Many people may enjoy the smell of burning metal fumes but i most certainly do not!. This can be one of many problems when one is pipeline welding. I should do welding manufacturing over pipeline welding. Pipeline welding has many more disadvantages than welding manufacturing has on my body, social, and family life. What is welding some may ask. “Welding is the use of brazing or soldering to join together or split apart pieces of metal.” Says miller electric inc. The First recorded forms of welding was from the bronze age when metal boxes were made by “pressure welding lap joints together.” In medieval times welding was used by hammer to forge weapons of different types....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding]

Welding : A New World Essay example

- Welding Created a New World Welding is literally building a new world. The world would not be the way it is today if it was not for welding. As you look around, almost everything you see may have been welded. Welding has changed our world in numerous ways over the last hundred years, and continues to do so with the new advances and groundbreaking ways to weld. Welding is an art, science, and high paying career all in one. Welding is the most effective way to join two pieces of metal, it is the only way to join them so they act as one....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding]

Essay on The Link Between Science And Welding

- When most people think about welding they think of it as a blue-collar, low-intelligence job, but they could not be more wrong. Welding is, admittedly, much more dirty than working in a cubicle for eight hours, but involves a huge amount of science that many don’t think about past college. The link between science and welding may sometimes be hidden by a thick layer of metal dust and spatter, but it can easily be seen if one knows where to look. Without advancements in science, there is no way that welding could be what it is today, have had the same improvements, or even be a very survivable process....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Arc eye, Welding helmet]

Essay on Welding And Its Effect On Society

- Welding whether its tungsten inert gas, metal inert gas, stick electrode arc, or oxyacetylene torch welding, welding is an incredibly freeing art. Welding allows you to create unlike any other form or sculpting or building process. It is not only an art it is also a building method and is very commonly used in the construction industry to build very strong rigid structures. Welding is the process of melting metals together to form a bond. There are usually three pieces of metal you must fuse to weld. Those are the two pieces of base metal along with a filler metal....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas metal arc welding]

Welding Is The Process Of Joining Metals Together Essay

- Welding and safety Welding is the process of joining metals together; there are many forms in doing welding. There are many things that have been created that have a welding process somewhere in the making for example these are a couple of things that have had welding done to be made, cars, planes, trailers, and many more things that are smaller like: metal chairs and metal tables. It was a long time before ancients had discovered a method that was made for joining metals. Workers in the ages of iron and Bronze Age began to solve the problems of forming, casting, and alloying metals (Larry Jeffus)....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding]

Essay about Why I Should Welding School

- My main career choice is to go to welding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma and get my welding certificate and become a professional welder. Right after high school I will be moving down there for welding school. I’m still deciding if I want to just go for the 7 months just for the welding certificate or if I want to go for 14 months and become a supervisor. I’m really just aiming for that first 7 months of welding school. That’s going to determine whether I go that extra 7 months or not....   [tags: Welding, Arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding]

The Process of Gas Metal Arc Welding Essay

- Gas metal arc welding, or most commonly referred to as MIG welding is a very common and sometimes preferred method of welding. Gas metal arc is personally one of the easiest and controllable welding types there is. Gas metal arc welding was originally made for weld materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, tin and lead. It was also used on steels, but shielding gases were highly expensive in the early 1900s limiting GMAW’s use on steel. It wasn’t till the mid 1900’s for GMAW to really take off....   [tags: process]

- GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is more economic; Springer reports that “ GMAW is an economic process because it has higher speeds and higher deposition rates than manual arc welding. There is also no need to constantly change electrodes” ( Page 11). GMAW has a higher speed, which means that you can get the job done faster. It also has high deposition rates which makes the weld look clean and smooth.” This method can be used for a high range of work, but it is not suited for repair work because of it’s weld quality” (Page 4)....   [tags: Welding Essays]
