Max Weber believed there to be six major principles in a bureaucratic organisation. The first was that there was to be a formal hierarchical structure which would centralise decision making as each level would control the level beneath them. Another principle was that each employee would specialise in the area they had the tactical advantage in and that promotion as well employment would be based solely on their abilities and merit. Supervisors had to have an impersonal and formal relationship when dealing with their subordinates. There were to be official rules, to ensure the consistency of work performance. The regulations would regard an employee’s rights, duties and expected behaviour. This would reduce ambiguity and they would know exactly what their accountabilities are. Workers also had to keep official record of every decision made so it will be there for future reference.
The bureaucratic system works well for organisations that require tight control such as the fast food industry. The duties and responsibilities of employees were clearly defined so there were no conflicting or overlapping obligations. Max Weber believed in division...

The company, IKEA uses a flat structure to build employee as well as customer mentality of involvement. They tend to be more flexible and can successfully adapt to a unique situation. Flat structures also builds employee loyalty due to their smaller hierarchies, meaning the gap between those at the top and bottom is much smaller. Thus reducing the breach and brings all staff closer.
As a concept, bureaucracy seems like the logical and rational choice and for some organisations, tall hierarchies and tight control are needed. Nonetheless, its inflexibility and rigidity will cause the downfall of many organisations. The bureaucratic system works well as a basic foundation, however organisations must employ different mechanisms for it to evolve and adapt to its ever changing surroundings.
