Race Relations in America
American society likes to believe that race relations in our country are no longer strained. We do not want to hear about the need for affirmative action or about the growing numbers of white supremacist groups. In order to appease our collective conscious, we put aside the disturbing fact that racism is alive and well in the great U.S.A. It hides in the workplace, it subtly shows its ugly face in the media, and it affects the education of minority students nationwide. In the following excerpts from an interview with a middle class African American male, the reader will find strong evidence that race plays a major role in determining the type and quality of education a student receives.
The subject of the interview is a twenty year old African American male who identifies himself as middle to lower upper class. Both of his parents graduated from high school and his father received a business degree from Bowling Green State University in northern Ohio. He attended a large high school whose student body consisted of mostly the white upper class and very few minorities. Although his educational story is not an earth shattering one, it does effectively illustrate the presence of racism in American education today.
“I want you to understand that the racism I encountered
during school was not blatant,” he explained. “No one burned crosses in my yard or yelled out racial slurs as I walked down the hall. No, what I encountered was so subtle it wouldn’t hold up in court.” This subtle racism began with quiet comments made by the high school counselor who was helping him to register for classes. Without asking him about his family and home situation the counselor assumed certain things about his life. “...

Racism in education is not just an issue. It is a national crisis. Teachers and administrators need to realize that these problems do exist and therefore appropriate actions need to be taken. Curriculums need to be revamped in order to incorporate a multicultural look at history. Students of other ethnic groups, especially African Americans, need to be encouraged to excel in academics, not just athletics. Above all, teachers at all different types of schools need to be sensitive to how and how often they teach about other cultures. Racism is not an innate human characteristic. Racism is a learned response. It is a response which our schools need to stop perpetuating.
Racism is not only a crime against humanity, but a daily burden that weighs down many shoulders. Racism has haunted America ever since the founding of the United States, and has eerily followed us to this very day. As an intimidating looking black man living in a country composed of mostly white people, Brent Staples is a classic victim of prejudice. The typical effect of racism on an African American man such as Staples, is a growing feeling of alienation and inferiority; the typical effect of racism on a white person is fear and a feeling of superiority. While Brent Staples could be seen as a victim of prejudice because of the discrimination he suffers, he claims that the victim and the perpetrator are both harmed in the vicious cycle that is racism. Staples employs his reader to recognize the value of his thesis through his stylistic use of anecdotes, repetition and the contrast of his characterization.
This power keeps the behavior of the oppressed well within the set guidelines of the oppressor (Freire, 2000, pg. 47). Critical Race Theory outlines this system of oppression as it relates to white and non-white races. By using the critical race theory coupled with the system of oppression described by Freire (2000), I propose that within the system of oppression, the oppressor must keep its own members in line with the prescribed guidelines by reinforcing the social norms from birth. Freire (2000) suggest that the interest of the oppressors lie in “changing the consciousness of the oppressed not the system” (pg.34). Identifying as white, therefore, starts at birth when members of the white class work to reinforce social norms that began with our founding fathers at Plymouth Rock. This long history of white privilege was taught to me and I continue to teach it to my children. As an educator of white affluent high school students, I believe we provide college and career counseling based on this white privilege system of oppression as well. On the contrary, this is a matter of concern in the modern era that attracts the concern of the government and the victims of African-Americans. In public schools, students are subjected to acts of institutional racism that may change how they interact with other students. In the short story “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by Packer, readers are allowed to view firsthand how institutionalized racism affects Dina, who is the main character in the story. Packer states “As a person of color, you shouldn’t have to fit in any white, patriarchal system” (Drinking Coffee Elsewhere 117). Racism (n): the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other race (Wordnet search, 1), a controversial topic in today’s society, a subject that many people try to sweep under the rug, but yet a detrimental problem that has been present in America since the colonial era. Will this dilemma come to a halt? Can all Americans see each other as equals despite their skin color and nationality; and what role has it played in past generations versus today’s generations and how will it affect our future? The connection of race and race relations in the United States was an ongoing issue, and while much progress was made, there are still people who revert back to old and ignorant takes on different races as the white man. This clearly relates to my own history based on the fact that various races are still being discriminated and treated unfairly and looked at as unequal.
