Schizophrenia, a psychological disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally, is a big factor in many people 's lives and affects not only the individual, but their family and friends who care for and support them. In the novel, A Beautiful Mind written by Sylvia Nasar, the story of a mathematical genius John Nash who is suffering from schizophrenia is told. "Nash proved himself, in the words of the eminent geometer Mikhail Gromov, 'the most remarkable mathematician of the second half of the century” (Sylvia 11). He is a true genius and the way he thinks is very unique. Every once in awhile his college best friend, who was nonexistent in reality, shows up with a little girl who he forms a strong bond with. Along with those two came the very demanding and authoritative general that he worked for and always obeyed. These people may have been imaginary and no one else could see them, but Nash was unaware of this. He truly did believe that these people were alive and that they needed his help. Since he believed that these people were real, he thought that there was nothing wrong with him at all. Exploring the impact of the disease on the Nash family’s life will be followed with a discussion regarding an assessment conducted of the family, through the use of the Calgary Family Assessment model. Conducting the assessment allowed us to determine two nursing priorities, and nursing interventions in relation to them through the use of the Calgary intervention model. Essentially it becomes evident that the challenges faced by the Nash family are in the functional domain.
