Drugs affect your brain and in turn can alter your moods and behavior. Drugs are chemicals that tap into our brain’s communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells receive, send and process information. Drugs interfere with the exchange of information in the brain producing changes that promote repeated drug use. Drugs can imitate the brain’s natural chemical messengers, or they over stimulate the reward circuit of our brain.
The brain becomes accustomed to the chemical changes caused by the chemical changes caused by the substance. It begins to alter its normal production and starts releasing neurotransmitters. The user begins to lose control and has difficulty limiting their drug intake; the need to consume the substance becomes more compulsive because it has affected the region of the brain that controls impulse, behavior, and craving.
Repeated drug use over time changes the brain structure, and functions in long-lasting and fundamental ways. For example, in marijuana or heroin, they have similar structure to the chemical messengers called neurotransmitters (naturally produce by the brain). So because of this similarity the drugs are able to fool the brain receptors and active nerve cells to send abnormal messages.
When using a drug like cocaine it causes the nerve cells to release an abnormal large amount of natural neurotransmitters and also prevents the normal recycling of brain chemicals which are needed to shut off the signal between neurons. Such disruption produces an amplified message that disrupts the normal communication patterns in the brain.

They are compelled to abuse drugs to bring their dopamine function back up to normal, which inquires a larger amount to achieve the normal dopamine high (this can be defined as tolerance). There are many changes in neurotransmitters other than dopamine. Long-term drug abuse causes changes in other parts of our brain chemical system, for example the glutamate which is a neurotransmitter that influences the ability to learn and again it influences the reward circuit. When the optimal concentration is altered by the drug abuse the brain tries to compensate which can cause impairment in cognitive functions. One must remember that changes areas of the brain that are critical such as our judgment, memory, learning, behavior control, and decision making.
