Section one
The translation of the Quapaw name means “downstream people”. The tribe got the name after splitting from the Dehgiha tribe and moving down the Mississippi river. There were two tribal divisions within the tribe. The two divisions were named Han-ka or the Earth People and the ti-zho or the Shy People. The total number of clans with in the Quapaw tribe is 21, some of the tribal clan names include; Elk, Eagle, Small Bird, Turtle, and Fish. For my five words I chose; Bitter- ppahi, chicken- sikka, gray fox- to-ka xo-te, jay bird- ti-ta ni-ka, star- mi-ka- x’e. The original design was done by Barbara on a piece of cardboard and later ones were hand painted on pieces of stiff canvas. The design is representative of several aspects of the Quapaw culture. Including; the four eagle feathers that represent the cardinal points of the land and the eagle is very sacred to the Quapaw people as it flies highest in the sky and closest to the creator. The red and blue colors of the background are representative of blankets used in Native American Church worship, and the word O-Gah-Pah is how people say the word Quapaw in our …show more content…
River and Oklahoma. Before doing the research for this essay I did know some of the information like the translation of the Quapaw name. However I learned more than I ever knew before, it was very interesting to learn more about the Tribe. A topic that could make for a good essay would be learning more about ceremonies and cultural practices so that young tribe members can connect with tribal culture more. Questions I still have about the tribe are how much of an influence did the French have on the Quapaw culture, and I would be interested in learning more about modern history of the tribe after the timeline ends? I feel incredibly grateful to be part of the Quapaw tribe, to be part of an amazing culture that I can learn about. Learning more about the tribe has made me even more interested in the cultural and more grateful to be part of something beautiful. Jess Blumberg, a writer and associate web producer at Smithsonian Magazine stated that the name Sioux means “little snakes” (Blumberg). This name is believed to have come from a neighboring Native American tribe that did not look to highly upon the Sioux. The Sioux way of life revolved around the Wakan Tanka, or “Great Spirit”. This Spirit included all that was majestic, sacred, or powerful. They believed that all living things had spirits, and would often thank an animal for sacrificing its life after killing it (Blumberg).
First of all, the Pomo tribe was located in North central California. Another example, the Pomo tribe lived in places that depended on the climate not too hot, not too cold. Pomo tribe lived in small communities of different types. One community was said to have 20 chiefs at a time and the head men lived in one main village. Also, the Pomo tribe lived in several types of shelter. Southeastern pomo used the tule reeds that grew in marshy areas around the Clear Lake to build houses. Last of all, the Pomo spoke 7 Hokan languages including Yakaya, Yokaia, Shanel, Kabinpek, and Gallinmero, and 2 more.
Tulalip tribe is Indian tribe admitted by federal government, which is located on the Tulalip reservation in the mid-Puget Sound area bordered on the east by Interstate 5 and the city of Marysville. Tulalip tribe is a place where government allow the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skyimish, and other allied bands living in. the Tulalip tribe’s land cover 22,000 acres. The Tulalip tribe has abundant nature resources to supply their people’s normal life such as “marine waters, tidelands, fresh water creeks and lakes, wetlands, forests and developable land” ( who we are). Bringing these Indians into Oklahoma changed the culture of the state when it was getting settled by white men and the Indians that were there from the Medicine Lodge Territory. “Mackenzie sent Jacob J. Sturm, a physician and post interpreter, to solicit the Quahada's surrender. Sturm found Quanah, whom he called "a young man of much influence with his people," and pleaded his case” (Famous Texans). Also, “The life of Quanah Parker is today seen as the extraordinary story of a person successfully living in two worlds, two minds, two eras” (Encyclopedia). There are not very many quotes said by Quanah, but there are two, which are “White man goes to his churches to talk about Jesus, the Indian into his Tepee to talk to Jesus (with Peyote etc.)” and “The Tonkawa killed him to make my heart hot. I want my people follow after white way. For several hundred years people have sought answers to the Indian problems, who are the Indians, and what rights do they have? These questions may seem simple, but the answers themselves present a difficult number of further questions and answers. State and Federal governments have tried to provide some order with a number of laws and policies, sometimes resulting in state and federal conflicts. The Federal Government's attempt to deal with Indian tribes can be easily understood by following the history of Federal Indian Policy. Indians all over the United States fought policies which threatened to destroy their familial bonds and traditions. The Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe of Maine, resisted no less than these other tribes, however, thereby also suffering a hostile anti-Indian environment from the Federal Government and their own State, Maine. But because the Passamaquoddy Tribe was located in such a remote area, they escaped many federal Indian policies.
The Aztec and the Kiowa were two very different people. The Aztec lived in the Central Valley of Mexico, while the Kiowa tribe were nomads that roamed the Great Plains of North America. The first Aztec people were from northern Mexico dating back to about 500 A.D. In the year 1427, the Aztec became very powerful, they fought with other cities in Mexico’s Central Valley and established their empire. In 1521, Spanish conquistadors came to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec main city, and destroyed it in a quest for gold. The Kiowa tribe roamed the Great Plains of North America, mostly in Oklahoma and Kansas. When the American settlers expanded to the West, this tribe was one of the many that was forced into small reservations. As of 2011, there were about 12,000 Kiowa left in the United States. Their reservation is located on the border of Oklahoma and Texas. The Aztec and Kiowa tribes were similar in some ways but different in many including their housing, food, clothing, religion, and warfare.
Like other eastern American Indians powhatans also created wampum out of white and purple shell beads. Wampum beads were traded as a kind of currency. But they were more important as an art material. The designs on their belts often told a story or represented a person’s family.
As mentioned in the introduction, the Quapaw tribe did not originate in northeastern Oklahoma. They in fact, were first known to be in the Ohio River Valley, which consists of several states in the northeastern United States. The first historical reports of the Quapaw Tribe were noted in the DeSoto Expedition of 1539-1543 (Thompson 360). Historians are unsure as to when the Quapaws actually settled in the lower Mississippi Valley and Arkansas River Valleys. Some believe that they may have not settled in these areas until the mid-seventeenth century, but others say that evidence they have found contradicts that information. By analyzing the Kawaiisu, a Great Basin Native tribe, I want to explore cultural wonders and observe their society as I compare an aspect of interest with that of another culture in the world, the Chuuk. Comparing different societies of the world will allow me to successfully learn about the Kawaiisu people in a more detailed and open minded manner. Populations all around the world throughout time have had different views and traditions of beliefs. Through this project, I hope to unravel and gain an understanding of different perspectives and ways of life.

Quapaw, Osage, and Caddo have many similarities as well as differences. For example: their religion, food acquisition, food production, and social structure. In this essay, there will be comparisons between the tribes as well as distinctive differences in each tribe. In this paper, information about these tribes will be further explored.
The Kiowa’s people were a great warrior culture society that roamed the plains before the arrival of the Europeans. The Kiowa’ Indian tribe formed an alliance with neighboring tribes and dominated the western plains for decades. In their native tongue they called themselves, ” Ka’gwa” which meant the “Principle People”. Before the intervention of European cultures they were known as the, ”People with large tipi flaps”. The Kiowa expanded their territories through out the southern plains, which is known as modern day Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. The mid-1900 century the Kiowa Indian tribe had several treaties with the United States, but it was the Medicine lodge treaty with the southern plains tribes that relocated the Kiowa’s into reservation located in present day Oklahoma. The Kiowa’s were known amongst other tribe as the large tipi flap people and their tipi art displayed battle emblems of Kiowa war society members. It was with horses came abundance of buffalo hide and larger tipis for the nomadic tribe, and with more hide came excellent craftsmanship. The first documented Spaniard to arrive into the southern plains was Don Juan de Onate, He gives his description of what he saw according to Peter Nabokov and Robert Easton book titled, Native American Architecture, which states the following,” fifty tents of tanned hides, very bright red and white in color and bell-shaped, with flaps and opening and built as skillfully as any house in Italy.” (Nabokov and Easton 1989) During Don Juan de Onate expedition to Eastern New Mexico he encountered tipis and described how Native tribes utilized dogs to transport their belongings. The Cahuilla were a Native Southern Californian tribe that occupied the Riverside County, Higher Palomar Mountain Region and East Colorado Desert. The tribe was divided into two groups or moieties know as Wildcats or Coyotes. The Cahuilla lived in small clans that varied in population, and together all the separate clans made up a larger political group called a sib ”http://www.aguacaliente.org/content/History%20&%20Culture/.” The tribe was at first considered to be very simple and savage because they were never interacted with. As the Europeans and Spanish Missionaries considered the desert an inhospitable place that was better to avoid because of its lack of food resources. Little did those European and Spanish missionaries know that the land was ripe with food, only if you knew the land and the seasons. The Cahuilla were a very interesting tribe that cared and loved their land and in return the land would provide them with an abundance of food and resources. The Cahuilla had a very simple yet intricate life that involved a seasonal migration in order to gain access to different foods. They relied on different ways of acquiring food which involved both hunting and gathering.
The Toltec, Aztec, and Mayan Indian Tribes TOLTECS> The Toltecs were an Indian tribe who existed from 900 A.D. to 1200. They had a capital city of Tollan, and their influences reached south to the Yucatan and Guatemala. They were a composite tribe of Nahua, Otomi, and Nonoalca. The Tolt ecs made huge stone columns decorated like totem poles. AZTECS> Aztecs were an American Indian people who rule an empire in Mexico during the 1400's and early 1500's.
