During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. I have a mindset now that is unlike anything I have ever achieved before. I continue to grow in this way of thinking and learning each time I interact with my fellow classmates and professors. I have learned to build my ideas and thoughts around a system of interactive engagements with team members of numerous student groups I have had the pleasure to be associated with. I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. College is a collection of diverse people, new experiences, and learning how to be an adult. While it is completely different from anything I have ever done before, I feel like I have adjusted well and am getting into the swing of being a college student. The transition from high school to college is difficult and I have faced some challenges including, learning good study habits and accepting who I am as a student, time management skills and putting myself into new situations where I can meet new people. While these have been difficult for me to encounter, they have taught me valuable lessons about myself and who I can and want to be.
Learning must begin with the teacher accepting the role of a learner by being willing to study and by being willing to apply oneself to becoming a professional educator, well prepared, and relentlessly endeavoring to advance one’s practice (Frere, 2005). As teachers apply themselves to becoming learners, then they can more aptly educate others. Teachers should not overlook professional preparation; however, they must also consider part of their efforts in scholarship to be constructing relationships with their students.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
One of the biggest “life changers” I have ever experienced is college. You get to experience a whole new atmosphere, meet tons of new people, and you get to live a new life. Going into college, most of the time, kids are nervous and scared for what their future. I was one of those students. Going into college I was quite nervous and I didn’t know what to expect. Often, I would hear how difficult college is and how much different it is than high school. I was not prepared to constantly be studying or doing homework because I was not used to doing those things in high school. I wasn’t too fond of being away from my home and my family as well, which is another reason I was skeptical about going off to college. From move in day to now, college has been such a pleasant surprise for me and I am loving it. My college writing course, General Studies Writing, or GSW, has also helped me learn quite a bit, but it could also be improved to help students learn even more than before. Overall, my college experience has been a great one and I couldn’t ask for a better start to a new life.
I think this is the way I learn best is through relation. However, I also learn that I connect really well with other’s feelings. I felt the little girl’s sadness when she was given too much realism. I shared in the excitement of a man starting a new job, especially one at a coffee shop. However, I also learned more about the teacher I would like to be. No matter what, I will always strive to save or help every child, even if it doesn’t matter in the end. I hope that aspect of me never changes. I care about people, especially when I have no just cause. I find these strengths within myself after only minimal observance. Imagine what further observations could depict. An article which spoke to my soul and summarized a mixture of feelings I had was “Courage” by Shirley A. Riddle Bendau. Throughout her narration, she depicts the discouragement and tiredness she feels over teaching. However, she realizes that she teaches for a reason, and that reason is because of “that moment when a student believes in himself…for the chance to speak honestly and listen openly while others do the same. I teach to become vulnerable, to be questioned and to question, to feel the sense of danger that comes with molding futures” (p. 96). y first semester at APU has gone by rather fast. It seems like orientation was only yesterday, and today we are taking finals. A lot has happened in these few months as I embark on my college career as a freshmen once again. College is a big step up when compared to high school. I am surrounded by adults far more knowledgeable than I. This year has also been full of new things, new classes, new adventures, new challenges and new risks. Around the age of seven I started going to first grade so my parents’ focus went all on that. Everyday I could hear my mom screaming be careful and especially she would say, “don’t take candy from strangers” which was getting annoying day by day. The idea of values started when I was going to school because before that I was at home and even when I wasn’t, I was still with my parents. The reason why they cared so much was because I was their only child and they wanted me to learn everything and be smart about whatever that was happening around me. When it was around their grade, I started to be a part of a concrete operational stage, and started to think logically about the world around me. One of my favorite subjects in school was mathematics.
The biggest piece of advice I would give to an incoming student is “You get what you put in”. Now I say this because my first semester of college was an experience that I disliked. Something that I did wrong was, I only went to class then went home. At the time I felt it was best to give my education all of my attention. It was like this for five days a week from August to December. I began to question if college was for me, and if I even belonged anywhere. I felt alone, clueless, and unimportant to the campus. I wasn’t use to feeling like this I was always in extracurricular activities, meeting new people, having close relationships, and being employed. Coming fresh out of high school straight into college is very exhausting. The first semester in college is without doubt, the toughest because freshmen’s must get situated by themselves. Overall, this semester was all about making mistakes. In these four months, I have learned about the mistakes I performed during this semester. Yet, something that was difficult for me grasp throughout this first semester is that college is unlike high school. Nobody is going to “grab your hand” throughout this journey. In college, everything must be done by ourselves or else we aren’t advancing. In high school, teachers, mentors, coaches etc. accommodated students so much that students are used to teachers doing everything for them. This was one of my difficulties in my first semester in college. I had everything handed to me in high school without moving a finger and now coming into college many things have completely changed.
Growing up, my parents, they always told me keep my grades up, to never put important things aside. They said learn from them, they had my oldest sister at a young age and they were not able to graduate or go back to continue educating them self. They struggle for so long, from buying themselves clothes, to paying the mortgage. Always put school first, work on myself to have the life I want when I am older, my parents said. Saying that, I believe; all the money I am spending, sacrifices I am making, skills I am gaining, and being able to say I fulfilled my goal will be worth it in about seven years for me.
