More than 1 billion people visit YouTube on a monthly basis (Reuters). To put that in perspective, The United States only a population of 317.6 million, while the highest, China, has a population of 1.355 billion (""). Youtube has become so renowned, it has gone from a noun to a verb. Want to watch someone getting trying to do stunts but failing? YouTube it. Want to see a monkey fling it's poo at someone? Well maybe not, but yes it's probably on YouTube. Or want to learn how to do a useful task, say like how to fix a car's radiator or learn a new language? Yes, one can YouTube such videos. Now imagine, if there is more than 1 billion monthly viewers online on YouTube, if one person gets even 1%, that is 10 million potential viewers. It's no wonder that YouTube is seen as a potential career path or of those seeking stardom, where millions of people try to reach either of those by uploading videos. But what exactly does someone need to know before walking down the path of a Youtube career? There are many challenges included in this line of work that one needs to know about before pursuing this type of job, from learning how to direct content to a group of people, the amount of work that goes into making videos and gaining viewers to the pitfalls that come from it.
To illustrate, YouTube is often described as a Social website where millions of people go to upload videos that anyone can click on and watch. How it works is that a person, as long as they have a camera, can upload something up and hopefully people will view the video, which leads to Google, who owns YouTube, to pay the content provider depending on how many views each video gets. According to The Telegraph’s article How YouTube changed the world, they state that “The online video behemoth has become the world’s third most-visited website, after Google and Facebook” (How YouTube changed the world). This website has thousands of videos that anyone with access to the it and internet can view. In the same article, they explain that Youtube has been the birthplace of some celebrities in the music, fashion, and video game scenes. (How YouTube changed the world). A new age has developed and society is altering to adapt to new forms of technological communication. Through the use of the vast Internet through the use of social networking, image boards, blog sites and news media, society is altering in a way never seen before. Over the past couple of decades, the use of the Internet has expanded and grown exponentially as new technology develops. Since the introduction of social networking as well as alternative news media sites, the way people interact and communicate has altered. New ideas and discussions have been created. With all of this freedom granted with easy access, society might take advantage of the ability to speak freely as an anonymous source. The personal obsession with imagery is lost because the users of the Internet are judging based on a screen name and nothing more. The ability to have an alternate persona allows users a freedom of speech and thought never granted before and can be erased and created with only a few clicks. We see that true opinion and reasoning among society varies on the anonymity of the commenter, where as one is more likely to be more holistic and honest if their imagery isn’t entirely threatened by the judgment of their peers, but because of many networking sites, individualism is lost; specifically, society’s lack of expression of true free thought and in reality because of social constraints.
