Choosing the best living environment is an integral part of students' academic success and financial stability throughout college. Where one lives often dictates the people with whom he or she associates, extracurricular activities, time spent on school work, and consequently one’s GPA in school. Any decision made in regards to housing can be seen as containing both positive and negative factors; however, after diligent research and studying the facts, even just the idea of requiring anyone to live on-campus is absolutely absurd. While living on campus certainly has several aspects that could be looked upon favorably by some such as having a close proximity to various locations on campus, being forced to live in on-campus housing by a first-year live-on requirement stifles a student’s ability to study and learn and replaces it with social obligations to go out and hang out with their roommates and friends. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this growing problem. By being permitted to live off-campus students are provided the ability to live their own lives and to grow as individuals, all the while learning important lessons pertaining to life in college, academically and socially, as well as life after college. Therefore, on this note, I move to abolish the first-year live-on requirement set forth by Georgia Southern University.
Before jumping into the advantages of dropping this costly and ineffective requirement, it is important to look at why people would be opposed to the abolition. In the early 1600s, America was given the opportunity of higher education. As decades flew by universities grew and flourished to a point where it’s no longer a struggle to be admitted into a university, and it’s also more accessible to pay for, such as student loans, federal loans, scholarships and grants (Kirszner). “Are Too Many People Going to College?” by Charles Murray poses a question about the mass majority of students going to college. Murray states various reasons why some recent high school graduates will not succeed in college, if they attend at all. When faced with new environmental changes and a lifestyle to adapt to, many college students feel overwhelmed by homesickness. Homesickness is most commonly due to anxiety, depression, and loneliness. A research studied concluded that homesick college students are three times more likely to drop out than non-homesick students. For many first-year college students, being away from home can be like an adventure. It’s exhilarating to be off on your own and completely in charge of your life and social well-being. Whereas, students, who commute struggle to get up in order to catch a bus or two to get to class on time. Students living on campus can spend extra money on other things such as movies since they don’t have to pay for food or transportation. In contrast, students who commute need to save money on the side in order to have access to public transportation to get to class and pay for food at the school. Students living on campus are familiar with places around the college and they know more students. However, students commuting don’t have time for this since they are more worried about getting home on time. Usually, students go away to the college or university of their dream to further their education and to learn to live on their own. The majority of students will be living by themselves for the first time, away from the support of their parents and siblings. Furthermore, living alone ensures that students must monitor and manage finances, clean their living quarters, and cook for themselves. The continuous practise of these skills ensures that students are equipped with abilities they will need for future living, thus improving their independence. Moreover, students often share a flat together. Living in close proximity to one another ensures that students develop their social skills. Aside from living away from home, the constantly monitored work, paired with the necessity to attend lectures, means that students learn to be organised, furthering their independence. In conclusion, a university education entails far more than simply attending lectures, completing coursework and taking exams. Students benefit from the diversity of social interactions offered in a university setting, and may encounter more opportunities through the social networks they develop. In addition, the ability to work independently and solve a range of problems will make them far more attractive to future employers.
