In California, the yellow starthistle invades 10 to 15 million acres of land (DiTomaso). This plant species is harmful to native plants and animals. Also, it has no beneficial purpose to the earth. Yellow starthistle is a problem in our world and it can be solved by extracting their roots from the ground and preventing the spread of their seeds (DiTomaso).
The yellow starthistle, also known as Centaurea solstitialis, is a plant that grows annually, has deep taproots, and can grow to be 1-3 feet tall (“Threat to Birds”). It harms native plants and animals. The yellow starthistle affects many native grazing animals because the spines can injure them if they come in contact with them (“Yellow Star Thistle”). Although it can harm other animals, this invasive plant is most harmful to horses because it is poisonous to them and causes them to develop a nervous disorder also known as “chewing disease” (DiTomaso).
