Rhetorical Analysis
John Grisham uses personal experience and cause and effect strategies for emotional appeals or also known as pathos to show the audience how movies greatly influence people and their decisions.
Rather on the news or a friend telling you of a murder, you feel sympathy towards the person who died and the family of the victim. There’s only so much you can feel about the murder, only because you either don’t know the victim or you don’t know all the details of what happened when you hear about the person and who they were before they died you start to connect, just like a character in a book that you slowly develop in your mind.
“I didn’t know much about him back then, just that he was soft spoken, exceedingly polite, always ready with a smile and a warm greeting.”(1) Grisham gives the background of Bill Savage, only to give the readers a sense of who Bill Savage was a nice person who you sympathetic towards. Grisham wrote that statement to get the readers attention. He didn’t want to just say Bill Savage was a good guy, because the statement is too plain. He adds more background that information for a reason. That reason was to show Bill Savage was a wonderful person and to make the reader feel sympathetic for what had happen and to make you want the murderer to serve their punishment.
“Bill Savage was not the kind of person to create ill will or maintain enemies”(1). Everyone has an enemy, that’s why Grisham says “maintain”. I take from this quote that once people got to know Savage they befriended him. Grisham is saying this to show the reader that Bill couldn’t have been killed by people he knows. “The townspeople of Hernado were stunned”(1). He is liked by everyone or else Grisham wouldn’t have said it that way. Bill was killed by a complete stranger.
“He was active in local affairs, a devoted Christian and solid citizen who believed in public service and always ready to volunteer”(1) .Ben had no rhyme or reason to murder Bill because Grisham demonstrates how bill has no character traits to have any enemies therefore the murder was done in cold blood. All these quotes which are background information and personal experience strategy are given so the reader has a sense of who Bill was and a sense of who Ben was a way of showing how effective background information is to a reader.

Is John Grisham’s book, Bleachers, a believable book when based on the use of New Critical analysis? Some people think that Bleachers is not believable while others think that the book is believable. Many people form their opinions of whether or not a book is believable solely on the book’s classification as nonfiction or fiction. Others use New Critical analysis to determine whether a book is believable or not. The use of New Critical analysis requires the reader to consider events that happen throughout the book and any conflict that may have occurred. It also requires that the reader focus on the plot of the book and the characters. Grisham sets the book to take place in a small, football crazed town, known as Messina. The book is set in present day time, but Grisham uses his characters to incorporate flashbacks from the sixties, seventies, and eighties. Grisham uses many characters throughout the entire book to tell the story of the Messina football coach, Eddie Rake. Even though the main character of his book is considered to be a young man named Neely Crenshaw, Rake is the real main character. The details that are given throughout Bleachers are based on both love and hate for Eddie Rake, as well as sorrow for his death. Based on the use of New Critical analysis, Bleachers is a believable book when considering the details that Grisham has given us.
In the “180” movie Ray Comfort outstandingly used rhetorical appeal throughout his argument in a thorough way to further grasp his audience’s attention. He used pathos, ethos, and logos during the course of his dispute of abortion and the Holocaust. The institution as an antagonist represents many different places/ideas toc Robby. However the first and possibly most obvious conflict is between Robby and the law as an institution. Robby is faced with an immediate conflict with the law after he is originally arrested and placed in jail. There was a two-year period between Robby’s arrest and his sentence. This in itself is a conflict and shows institutions acting as the hero’s chief opponent. “Though his constitutional rights to a speedy trial and speedy sentencing had clearly been violated, neither those wrongs, nor any others…were brought to the attention of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court…” (Wideman 19). The conflict continues because the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania took three years to deny his appeal, and by that time Robby was already at Western State Penitentiary serving a life sentence. In some ways, the use of advanced diction could cause problems for the reader to comprehend it, however the author has worked in small descriptions of what some of the more advanced judiciary terms are. Finally, the author uses a very advanced characterization of virtually all the characters mentioned within the story, from the mature and well-respected Theodore Boone to the every-so opinionated office secretary Elsa. Without a doubt, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer entices the reader into the mystery that is will Mr. Duffy be proved innocent or guilty? John Grisham does a great job into hooking the reader into wanting more of this eye-opening crime and drama novel.
Pathos is the appeal to an audience’s emotion. Aside from the other two appeals that I have outlined in this essay, pathos is by far the most recognizable appeal in Lamott’s article. The humorous tone of the article is very easily recognized and frankly, it is hard not to laugh at some of Lamott’s uncalled-for sarcastic remarks (whether it be in your head or out loud). For example, when writing about how every writer she knows never writes an elegant first draft, she continues, “All right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much. We do not think that she has a rich inner life or that God likes her or can even stand her” (1). By making such presumptuous claims about this person, some audiences might find this type of language comical or entertaining, which in turn makes them want to believe Lamott and continue reading. In a way this helps Lamott seem credible to some readers, in which case she has created a successful argument. On the other hand, some readers might find this kind of language unprofessional and inappropriate. Because much of the article deals with language that is full of humor and sarcasm, it would make sense to say that Lamott has directed this article towards an audience who is looking for something more entertaining than a typical statistic-filled essay that one might consider mainstream in this field. Bryan Stevenson wrote a book called Just Mercy, which is about the failures in the criminal justice system. He tells the stories of victims of horrible injustices. He uses pathos as a narrative technique in order to persuade readers to feel empathetic towards the people about whom he wrote in his book. Stevenson uses pathos to have the reader feel a variety of emotions, specifically sympathy, anger, and hope because he knows that those emotions have more influence on the readers.
This examination will look at the short story “Killings” by Andre Dubus and the main characters in the story. The story begins on a warm August day with the burial of Matt and Ruth Fowler’s youngest son Frank. Frank’s age: “twenty-one years, eight months, and four days” (Dubus 107). Attending the funeral were Matt, his wife Ruth, their adult children and spouses. Matt’s family is extremely distraught over the murder of their youngest son/brother, in their own way. There are implications of wanting to kill Richard Strout, the guy accused of being the murderer: “I should kill him” (107), as stated after the service. This comment is considered a fore-shadowing of what is to come in the thought progression of Matt and Ruth.
It is common for those experiencing grief to deny the death altogether. Many people do this by avoiding situations and places that remind them of the deceased (Leming & Dickinson, 2016). However, by simply avoiding the topic of death and pain, the mourner only achieves temporary relief while in turn creating more permanent lasting agony (Rich, 2005). After casually meeting the rape victim, Teena Maguire, and then being called to her crime scene, John Dromoor goes on a hero’s journey, starting with the hearing in September 1996. When madness ensues in Judge Schpiro’s courtroom, “Dromoor had seen the derailment. Sick in the gut, had to escape” (Oates 75). It is just a month after that Dromoor begins to take matters into his own hands in order to protect Teena and her daughter. By shooting James DeLucca with deadly force, an act that can be considered by some one of a madman, Dromoor asserts himself as the family’s protector and ‘hitman’. In his further actions, seeking out and likely being the killer of the Vick brothers and Fritz Haaber, Dromoor does what he knows the Maguires are desiring: to feel safe. Dromoor has a serial killer gene in his body, using his victim’s weaknesses to lure them to their death (i.e. Fritz Haaber’s affection towards young girls), but the reader knows that he is so meticulous because he wants the best for the Maguires. When the young daughter of the victim feels sad, Bethel Maguire calls the man that she knows can protect her, John Dromoor, and says, “Help us please help us John Dromoor we are so afraid” (Oates 120). Then, after seeing the convict that scared her the most, Fritz Haaber at the mall, Bethie confides in her grandmother to make her aware of Haaber’s presence at the mall purely because she knows that her
