The strong persuasive essay consists of the proper use of Aristotelian appeals and well oriented arguments constructed by means of Toulmin model of rhetoric. Using those techniques, Michael Chang, the author of the article “America’s Failing Education System,” attempts to convince the reader that the U.S. secondary educational system is poor in math and science because of the inability of secondary school math and science teacher, eventually causing the U.S. incompetence in the global environment. However, Chang fails to establish effective Aristotelian appeals due to the insufficient explanation of his professional credential , the inadequate coherence of the audience and the exigency, and the collapse of Toulmin model. In addition, inconsistent and redundant paragraphs make the author’s thesis unclear, and the lack of citations and international data makes the reader doubt the entire idea of the article. Thus, the poor rhetorical techniques reduce the cogency of Chang’s argument.
To begin with, the article is missing ethos due to the absence of the information of how the author is related to the educational field. From the description of the feathered hair, which was one of the popular hairstyles from 1970’s to early 1980’s, the reader can assume that the author had been a high school student during 1980’s. Additionally, Chang mentions Led Zeppelin, the English rock band from 1968 to 1980 and Dave Matthews, the popular American band during 1990’s. However, the author’s professional credential is not presented in the article, making the audience question the authority. In my opinion, I agree with the writer’s explanation on the importance of high school, and the relationship between the teachers and children, because due to the world global change the responsibilities of teachers are imperative and crucial. Schools are the basic foundation of knowledge, which is imparted to children. They give a chance for children to gain knowledge in various fields such as humanity, literature, history, mathematics and science. By obtaining knowledge, they are in a better position to know the world around them. A school is a society where faith and other values are developed. Schools also play an important role in a democratic social set up. Students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Schools are the backbone of a society, where children interact with other children and develop certain social skills. Education in schools opens doors to various opportunities that would not be possible if it had not been for the knowledge one gained at school. However, in the articles, “Idiot Nation” by Michael Moore and “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, the authors express their concerns about the degrading quality of education. There are many problems the education system is facing today, and several of them are having negative effects on the quality of the education that the students are receiving which are highlighted aptly by the effective use of rhetorical strategies by Moore and Gatto.
In Conclusion, although I have a partial disagreement with some aspects of the article, it was with great pleasure I read it because I found the way in which the author relates education with many features of the American Culture innovate. Furthermore, it is impressive the way in which the author relates his life memories with the weakness of the field where he works. Events that most of us have experienced have been converted into strong arguments by the author. Education has been one of the pillars of modern countries. Thus, Mark Edmuson message should be taken as a foundation to future education strategies. The way in he expresses his thoughts shows a big desire to see an education system evolving in tandem with the society welfare.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.

When we see these statistics all around our societies, in such masses, it makes using common sense assumptions or subjective claims to give valid reasons or explanations for such large scale differences in society’s educational achievement impossible. If we instead use (Mills 1959) sociological imagination, we can construct a far better argument for explanation built on research and reliable findings to answer questions not only about our education system but ourselves in our society from our past, present and possibly to begin to predict or understand our future structure and place in society.
