Humans Versus Zombie: Fighting Controversy and the Undead

Across the college campuses of America, student participate in a growing phenomenon, Humans Versus Zombies. The game began in 2005 at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and has since gained viral participation in over 650 colleges across America. Our campus at the University of Southern Indiana has hosted an event lasting two weeks on campus. Humans Versus Zombies (HVZ) is not the only activity to gain a great deal of popularity through college campuses, activities like “Assassin”, “Streetwars”, and other activities classified as pervasive games have also gain some attention and controversy. I wish to inform the good these games do, its controversy, and how to solve any hostility from this activity.
HVZ started in Goucher college in Maryland in 2005, and has to this day been very reliant on its strict set of rules. To best explain it to outsiders to the game,It is best summarized as an elaborate game of tag. HVZ involves the zombies trying to survive by tagging a human within 48 hours, while humans try to survive by warding off any zombies with a plethora of weapons, from Nerf guns to sock balls. HVZ is classified as a pervasive game,defined as any live action games that act out specific situations, and in this situation, the fictional zombie apocalypse. When I signed up for this game, I welcomed myself into a community of people all around campus. When I started out I was expecting a bunch of hardcore geeks that would go all out in this game, only to find that the sport attracted a plethora of groups. As I weathered the zombie onslaught, I found myself working with members of greek life, sports, and other activities I don’t normally associate myself with.
