On Britain’s quiet streets, nothing seems to disturb the peace that dusk delivered. But, mere miles from the Kingdom’s coast, the sea is abundant with violence. German submarines slink below, prepared to strike, prepared to kill; prepared to make an enemy. As history was to be made on this day, it seems that there was no man more fit to craft it. This enemy once said “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it myself.” He decided that if something were to be fixed, he’d be the one to do it. This self-confidence translated well into politics, enhancing his leadership. He is the man who assumes control. He is Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill is widely considered influential to all with whom he graced his presence with. His ability to lead the United Kingdom, enduring the perils of both World War II and the Cold War, go beyond his decorations in the military and literature.

Sir Winston Churchill was born into affluence. He was born on the 21,000 acre estate of the Dukes of Marlborough (Churchill1.) The day was the last of November; the year 1874. Blenheim palace, eight miles from Oxford, celebrated New Yorker Jennie Jerome’s and Lord Randolph Churchill’s first born son (Churchill1.) Coming from a powerful family line, Churchill was born to be successful. His dad was the Chancellor of the Exchequer for Queen Victoria, while his own father was the Viceroy of Ireland. Churchill spent his early years in Dublin, Ireland, but attended two private schools in England (Churchill1.) Academics did not come easily to him, forcing him to ‘repeat the lowest grades three times longer than anyone else’ (Churchill1.) It’s important to realize the time period that all this took place in to understand the manner that Churchill thought and worked. World War was raging. Homes were fled, churches burned, and the world seemed to be at the mercy of Nazi Germany. Churchill was not to be controlled. As was previously said, there was a seven month time of no war, of waiting. Churchill called this “twilight war.” The fighting soon started as the Nazis invaded Norway. As is well known, France was defeated by Germany (World War 2 Timeline.) While Churchill had declared war on Germany, he refrained from making enemies with Russia, nurturing a rough alliance. The Axis of Powers attacked Russia as well. The war ended Germany surrendering to the U.S. and to Russia the following day. Later, Churchill lost the election as Prime Minister of Britain (World War 2 Timeline.)
