“Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve now arrived to the most crucial moment of this event. And the winner goes to… The Red Team!” This announcement was followed by a great applause. The champion, of course, was filled with triumph, too occupied in receiving congratulatory wishes. The non-winners, on the other hand, were beaming at the champion with admiration, while having ‘better luck next time” looks on their faces. Each of the non-winners may come from different backgrounds but all of them have a unified purpose that is winning. In the passage, “Winning isn’t Everything” by Peter Hamill (1983, p.25), it indicates that wining is not the most important aspect in a game and losing is not something to be ashamed of. However, after reading this passage, I could not bring myself to fully agree with Hamill’s thoughts. After all, winning is everybody’s utmost priority.
Everyone loves to win. According to Hamill’s passage (1983, p 26), it points out that the loss of Joe Frazier to Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring was an incident that Frazier should be proud of because Frazier’s loss had turned Ali into the legend in the boxing ring. Hamill intended to show that winning is not everything; losing can also be an honorable act. However, I disagree with this statement because Frazier did not lose deliberately just to raise Ali’s fame. Both of them came to the tournament to win but not to lose. Hamill’s statement will most probably be an insult to both of the boxers, especially Frazier, as the desire to win is innate in every human. The triumph of defeating the opponent is indeed satisfying and euphoric. I appreciate Hamill’s efforts to convince the readers that winning is not everything, but his efforts to reduce the value of winning may discourage the readers to be less determined and competitive. Hence, in my opinion, winning is everybody’s utmost priority as it motivates the winners to do their best and to complete the whole game. Hamill’s points are right, but I still unable to fully accept his opinions after I had finished reading this passage. After all, a saying by Vince Lombardi goes “Winning is not everything, but wanting to win is.”

Because Caitlin felt upset after being eliminated at a 2006 geography bee, she realized that she didn’t want to feel like this again, and the only way for that to happen is to push even harder to reach goals. If we did not fail or lose how could we learn to value or appreciate success/winning? What would we work towards, strive for or struggle with if we won all the time? What would motivate or drive us to do better or want better for ourselves if there was no concept of competition? If we are only recognized for attendance or participation because there is nothing beyond what’s actually handed to us, then all of society would come to a screeching halt. I chose to discuss why competition is a good thing and how it makes sports and other aspects, even in everyday life, better. I will focus on key points such as the difference between being successful and not being successful based on competition and will power along with a drive and goals. I will also talk about how genetics of a winner and how natural selection plays a factor in determining a worthy competitor. I will point out some of the main reasons for competition in both sports and life. I can give you my personal experience because I am extremely competitive and I support competition and the growth it produces.

The championship game loss helps the audience, especially young adults with high, aspiring dreams, to understand, that even if you do work-hard and aren’t awarded with winning your goal, this isn’t the end of your journey. It only means you have to work harder in the future, if you want to succeed at your goal. This conclusion shows young children how to lose properly and how to be grateful for what they have, since being good a winning is a much easier task. When competing in a sport, the performance of the athlete can be compromised if he or she doesn’t maintain a healthy lifestyle. While staying physically fit and exercising are important in any athlete’s daily routine, there are other factors to determine a “healthy” lifestyle. Similarly, an athlete should practice good sportsmanship while competing. Respect for a fellow athlete is the root of every great athlete. In order to perform well at any sport, an athlete has to enjoy the game. Take soccer for instance, if a soccer player does not enjoy playing soccer, then it will be significantly harder to perform at his or her best. Along with enjoying and respecting the sport, an athlete has to have the mindset of a champion. Thinking like a perfect athlete will provide the motivation and determination to achieve the goals of a perfect athlete. Consider Bruce Lee, a world renown martial artist and fighter. Lee is known as one of the greatest martial artist in history and is respected for his methods. “If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life”, Bruce stated. “It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. Even though, people were conditioned to compete in the past, it is not pertinent anymore as it became another aspect in the modern day. Rubin further states, “people brought up this way feel lost.because they exist to compete and they’ve lost their raison d’être in the new situation” (312). Learning to compete with others is taught by an individual’s family and the individual forgets why he/ she is competing as they only focus on beating their fellow mates.
