Throughout the duration of history, many important figures arose to lead nations to great conquests. This list of important figures includes William the Conqueror who had risen from somewhat humble beginnings to become the conqueror of England. Descendants of Viking raiders, the Normans eventually came to settle in a region in the northern portion of France. Before long, they developed their own culture and grew in might. And so, when William, the Duke of Normandy at the time, conquered England, he became the first Norman King of England. Conquering England plays out to be of great importance, as this event would shape the future for many years to come. And so, William the Conqueror plays a role of great importance in world history as his actions brought the Normans to England.
Before he became William the Conqueror, his contemporaries referred to him William the Bastard, emphasizing his illegitimate birth. At the time of William’s birth, his father, Robert I, had not yet become the Duke of Normandy; people recognized him as the Count of Hiesmois. In addition, people sometimes referred to Robert as Robert the Devil since rumors floated about that Robert had killed his own father, Richard II. Supposedly, Robert I was descended from Rolf the Viking who had become the ruler of Neustria around 911 BC (Douglas 16). In the year 1028, Robert I succeeded his brother, Richard III, as the Duke of Normandy (Freeman 13). Unfortunately for William, his father, Robert I, never married his mother, Herleva, alternately known as Herleve or Arlette; therefore, society recognized William as an illegitimate child and would harbor prejudices against him. 1066: The Year of the Conquest, written by David Howarth, tells of one of the most important dates in the history of England. In 1066, William the Conqueror and William of Orange fought the historical Battle of Hastings. The outcome of this battle lead to many changes to the English people. The Norman people became assimilated into the English way of life. Howarth proceeds to tell the tale of the Battle of Hastings through the eyes on a common Englishman.
Charlemagne also known as Charles the Great, created a legacy that is greatly honored still to this day. He is seen as one of the greatest conquerors ever because of territories he conquered, the diversity he created, and the building of one of the greatest empires known to mankind. Since the fall of Rome, most of the continent of Europe has not been ruled by someone, until Charlemagne came along. Charlemagne was the founder of the Holy Roman Empire and was the one person to practically lead Europe out of the Dark Ages.
There is no question that Beowulf was a great leader. His fearlessness, selflessness, and faith in God all aided in shaping him into the great warrior and the great king that he was. Ancient civilizations and modern populations alike should all strive to live their lives in accordance with the characteristics of a great leader that Beowulf demonstrated, no matter where they come from or who they are.

The Agreement between Lord and Vassal is an account of a relationship between Hugh of Lusignan and William V of Aquitaine (who was also Count of Poitiers ). This account is seen through the perspective of Hugh, and provides examples of different powers, actions, and decisions of lords and vassals. According to the introduction of the Agreement, this account was "wrote or dictated " between 1020 and 1025 . Through criticism and analysis of this source, I hope to determine what information historians can gather from a first-person document and how/if this document has a place in the milieu of history.
October 14th 1066 he and William fought at the famous battle of Hastings. William and his army of Normans came, saw, and conquered. True to his promise to his fellow warriors, William systematically replaced the English nobility with Norman barons and noblemen who took control of the land, the people, and the government.
