Princeton is an excellent university that provides good opportunities and education for hard working students to pursue their dreams. Princeton University is located in New Jersey with 30,000 residents in a safe and pleasant neighborhood (Princeton University - About Princeton; Princeton University - Facts & Figures; Princeton University). There are shops, eco-friendly streets, restaurants, and nice parks surrounding the campus. There is a shuttle train, the “Dinky,” can transport students directly from the campus to Princeton Junction Station where students can travel to New York and Philadelphia within an hour each. The total student enrollment, as of 2013, was 7,912 students, with 5,264 undergraduate applicants and 2,648 graduate applicants. For students who needed financial aid, about 60% of the students, they were awarded an average financial support of $41,450 out of the $58,965 that is the original tuition fee. The university does their best to create a lively campus life that revolves around the activities to benefit each community member in expressing their talents and interests (Princeton University - Campus Life). The distinctive quality of the student life in Princeton is the closely knit and integrated residential community. With about 6 different cafes on campus, the students are provided a place to relax with snacks, have a place of meeting, and do homework outside of their dorms. There are over 8 annual events on the campus every year (Princeton University - Annual Events). Also, there are lots of different campus clubs and diverse centers to aid students to a comfortable and leisurely school life. In this brief report, I will be examining common practices, policies and resources that support Black women attending Princeton University. Included is a brief review of national averages in regards to higher education attainment and a rationale for continued rhetoric on this topic. My interest in this topic stem from my experience at State University’s Women Studies Program. While the conversation around gender is necessary and crucial, little attention was given to discussions of how race and gender affect an individual’s lived experience. I was constantly aware of my lack of representation among students who were in those classes and the faculty who taught.
In our undergraduate admission system, fully 110 points out of 150 are given for academic factors including grades, test scores, and curriculum. We only count 12 points for test scores, but that is because we value high school grades to a much greater extent--- they can earn up to 80 points. We consider many other factors as well. Race is one of those, but a student who is socioeconomically disadvantaged also can earn 20 points (students cannot earn 20 points for both factors, however). Geographic diversity is also important, and a student from Michigan’s upper peninsula, for example, earns 16 points.
In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
Since more and more students apply to college, the college admission process gets more competitive. Cook expresses that both American and international applicants increases, and the increase of the applicants lead universities to have lower acceptance rate than before. Since America’s college system began, someone has had the responsibility of deciding who gets into a college and who does not. Colleges and universities must draw the line somewhere as to who has the opportunity to become more educated and who gets a full-time job at McDonald’s. This decision-making process has always been a difficult job and has become even more difficult in recent years as competition in higher education gets tougher. College admissions departments have come up with a system which combines indicators such as standardized test scores, high school class rank, grade point average, and essays. Different schools put different amounts of emphasis on these gauges but most use some mixture of them.

Every year, there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry about another year. Finally, the point comes in a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.

Why should a student attend an HBCU, some may ask. Those considering attending college should attend an HBCU no matter what their race or ethnicity may be. Many people think HBCUs are only African American colleges due to what the acronym stands for, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. According to CollegeXpress, “HBCUs do primarily serve African American students, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to have a limited cultural experience. On the contrary, people from all over the world come to the United States to attend HBCUs, which results in diverse student bodies.”(1) Anyone can attend and sometimes when an individual is not black and decides to attend an HBCU, scholarships are given because they want to show that they are willing to accept anyone, regardless of their race. Some HBCUs that are listed as being the best are: Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College, but they are just a few of many out there to attend. There are also several famous people who attended HBCUs: Jesse Jackson, Wanda Sykes, Samuel Jackson, Toni Morrison, and Oprah Winfrey. Many students that have attended an HBCU love the friendly environment, the diversity, and the knowledge gained. If a student is not financially stable, the HBCU is willing to work out payment arrangements and help out in an effort for the student to receive the education that they deserve. It appears that a large portion of those that attend Virginia Union University came because of the cultural experience or because someone in their family attended and they want to continue the legacy. Most universities require four English credits, at least three math credits, at least two foreign language credits, at least two social studies credits, and at least two laboratory science credits to accept students into the school. However, these schools do look at test scores and students with a musical background do tend to have higher test scores. Additionally, if there is a question between two possible applicants, colleges will look at extracurricular activities. Whichever student has the most impressive list of extracurricular activities is more likely to get accepted than the other.
It seems that the ultimate function of a high school student is to get their diploma and then go straight into the workforce. The mindset behind this has people questioning “Is a College worth it?”In today’s society a college education is vital to live a sustainable life in America. Many people would subject to that statement, but yet they’re stuck at a low paying job living from paycheck to paycheck struggling to support their family.
