Why Fairytale Weddings are So Desirable

Celebrity weddings enable the media to sell more magazines because of the impact of celebrity culture in America. “Americans’ acceptance of weddings as visual entertainment and their vicarious enjoyment of the social lives of the rich and famous,” encourage media to continue covering celebrity weddings and life in general in great detail (Jellison 113). People want to copy the images of celebrities and often have a famous person they like to refer to as an idol or an inspiration. So, if a certain superstar incorporated something extravagant into their wedding, their fans want to follow in their footsteps. For example, “‘[Ivanka Trump] walked down the aisle in a beautiful custom made lace Vera Wang gown inspired by the dress worn by Hollywood star Grace Kelly’” (Winch 56). Grace Kelly, an American film actress, married the Prince of Monaco, so she was a celebrity and then became royalty. Ivanka Trump, currently a businesswoman, has celebrity status. So, this example shows a celebrity trying to imitate a wedding involving a royal and a celebrity. Trying to mimic styles of royalty and celebrities is expensive because the original dress probably cost a fortune since it was custom made, so imitating the dress also involves a great sum of money. The price of trying to copy the style of an entire wedding would be even more expensive. However, this allows couples to pretend they have celebrity or royalty status for a day and acquire a feeling of living a fantasy (Otnes 13). Celebrity weddings, although they are not royalty, present a fairytale like wedding they can mimic through the power of money and greatly influence women’s ideas of weddings through publicity in magazines.
