Life is a path of accomplishments and achievements as well as distress and confrontations. It has its own ups and downs. But every human being lives it and has to live it as there is no other option. What we learn as we age making right choices and using the support that we have around, like our parents, grandparents, and friends makes us who we are. In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, Connie is a typical human being who has to deal with all the situations that come in her life. Situations like dealing with people whom she has never met and if gone out of hands, controlling the situation using intelligent methods. Even though Connie a normal teenager, who loved her friends, went to school, and enjoyed life, she was mercilessly harassed by a stranger to an extent that could have been avoided.

Initially, Connie had a normal childhood. She visited her friends who were just like her in many ways. Her best friend’s father used to drop them all to the mall as it was not safe if they all went alone to the mall. She belonged to a family that had many internal issues and problems. For example, her mom was jealous of her beauty and would always annoy her by comparing her with her elder sister. Connie’s sister was a simple girl but was not very pretty. She was 24 and was living in the house with her family. She was very organized and up-to-date with household chores. This comparison of two sisters by the mother was not liked by Connie. But Connie did not solve her family issue by having a healthy discussion with her mother regarding her attitude and jealousy toward her. Still Connie loved her family. She went to a good school and belonged to a decent family. The text basically describes her as...

...been the other way around that Connie could have manipulated him into using his affection for her and getting him in trouble. She could have done something like making a threat of saying that if Arnold does not leave her alone then she will never go out with him. Connie could have acted a little smarter with Arnold. It is really weird that even if she was trying to resist, it was not working. She could have handled the situation boldly and firmly.

Initially, Connie could not predict what was going to happen and she did not understand the seriousness of the problem. She underestimated the situation. She could have resisted properly in each situation. As Liane Cardes said, “Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence is the key to unlocking our potential.” A continuous effort on Connie’s part could have saved her from the wrong decision of going with the boys.
