With the rise in popularity of technology, the mass media broadcasted image of “cool,” an over-sexualized subculture, and the strained relationship between this generation of teenagers and their parents the dynamic of today’s youth in society has changed. The expectations of growing up are being propelled, teenagers are asked, are expected to grow up faster and to enter the world of adulthood before they are truly prepared to face the real world challenges that this shift entails. The British television show Skins, recently adapted into an American version by MTV, depicts just what causes teenagers to feel compelled to grow up so quickly, and how they act when the world they enter is nothing like the one they were expecting. The main reasons for this shift can be narrowed to fit three categories, though the categories look more like a Venn diagram than a spreadsheet. In the television series justifications for the umbrella statement that this generation is growing up too quickly can be found in the role of sex and sexuality in society, through the lens of technology and mass media, both how it strains our relationships and how it sets impossible standards of cool and perfect, and the role of that of the older generation, the parents of the characters, how they interact with their children, and the repercussions of a strained relationship. It is through these main ideas light can be shed on the question, when do kids stop being kids? While the teenagers in the television series are all technically adults, in the beginning of the show all attending the same commuter college, they still live in their parents’ homes and need parental support, perhaps at their point in their lives more than ever, as they attempt to bridge the... ... middle of paper ... ...he next. It discusses the social implications of teenagers growing up too quickly and how the causes for this sudden gap in maturation time may be traced back to certain sources, sources that proved to be exactly what I was looking for in while writing this paper. Future Sources: There are many sources on the generation gap and the affect that the relationship between parents and children have that I have not yet explored. I would like to find more child and adolescent psychology, which will delve into the importance of a strong, and healthy parental relationship compared to that of an absentee parent, missing parent, older parent, etc. I feel that I did not focus enough on how important this relationship is, especially as I began to realize just how prevalent the topic is within the show, and I feel it is something I will like to go into more depth about.
