When people think of memory, they most likely picture it as a perfect replica of the actual events that took place in their life time that can be replayed in their head over and over again in perfect sequence. But, memories can be very deceiving and inaccurate, misleading people into thinking they did something or were somewhere when they actually weren’t. These memories that we believe are real and are actually made up memories that the brain creates are called false memories. False memories feel so real to people that they in fact believe that they are what actually happened in their past. People rely on their memory every day when dealing with everyday occasions and in some instances matters that can change somebodies life forever. But maybe the human memory should be one that is taken a second look at, especially when dealing with matters that could potentially change the course of somebodies life. False memories can impact a person’s life when dealing how they remember events, remember people, and how they behave or view different things or people.
A false memory is an altered or made up memory of an event that never actually took place. In cases of false memory, it is hard for the person to believe it is a false memory because to them it seems so real and they actually believe it was an event that took place in their life. There are different factors that can attribute to these false memories including misinformation and misattributing the original source of the information (Cherry, Kendra). Another factor that can lead to these false memories is existing knowledge and other memories interfering with the development of new memory which causes the remembrance of and event to be altered or completely wrong (Cherry, Kendra). Many people are not aware of false memories or the idea of false memories and since many people don’t know about them, they would have no reason to think the things they believe are inaccurate or made up ideas or events. This is exactly why people need to be cautious of what their mind is telling them because these false memories can impact a person’s life with how they behave in certain situations or how they remember important events that happen in their lives. At the same time, false memories can be used to benefit people’s lives and lead them to make more healthy live choices in the long term.
