To begin with, I would like to define what a society is. Society is a group of people involved in persistent interpersonal relationships, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. It consists of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. Society is not only the group of people and their culture, but the relationships between the people and the institutions in that group. Those social institutions are the basic models of social activity followed by the majority of the members of a given society. Thus, institutions form the bedrock of a society because they represent relatively fixed models of behavior which endure over time. Institutions involve norms and values to which large numbers of individuals conform, and all institutionalized modes of behavior are protected by strong sanctions. Norms are the rules of conduct which specify appropriate behavior in a given range of social contexts. A norm is a guideline or an expectation for behavior. Each society makes up its own rules for behavior and decides when those rules have been violated and what to do about it. Norms change constantly. Every culture has norms that establish expectations about what types of behavior are appropriate for particular people in certain social institutions such as children should be obey to their parent based on the principle of filial piety. When a person violated a norm, members of society responded by recognizing the act as deviant. Deviance is a property conferred upon behavior rather than as an intrinsic quality of behavior.
