What Makes One Unique

Every person living on this earth is unique in various ways. To many, I serve as a role model for their kids. One statement that my mother really hashed to me was that a person never knows someone until they walk a mile in their shoes. This statement is really what makes me the person that I am today. Throughout this reflective essay, I will be reflecting on the following: what I remember about my family, what things I remember about my childhood, what jobs I have had in my life, and my personal, professional, and academic goals. All of the criteria mentioned about are what makes me unique. I hope that by the end of this essay one will understand that people have difficulties and that one never knows someone until they walk a mile in their shoes.
When asked how my family was like, it can be pretty simple and straightforward. My family consisted of a religious based family, where I was the only child. My Father died when I was three I can recall my family being very liberal. My whole family seemed to believe in governmental action to achieve equal opportunity and equal opportunity for all; it is the responsibility of the state to improve social harms and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights, the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need, and that people are basically good. Up until the age of three, my mother and father had five foster children that they cared for. Since my father passed away when I was three, this made my mom have to give up my foster brothers and sister. This event seemed to break abort the morals and values that my family once had.

This occurred just right after my father passes away. With just my mom and me in the house, it was hard to get to have fun like when my father was living. One memorable punishment that I dreaded was the good ole’ fashion spankings from my mom. It seemed like every time I would get a spanking, Mr. Kenneth, who lived across the street, comforted me with a Grape Popsicle. Many times, he would offer advice on how to keep from getting in trouble for the same thing again. Although this seemed like a reward with the Popsicle, it served as a lesson on how I could not get in trouble again. However, my mom opposed it and insisted that I not go over their and beg for Popsicles. My childhood revolved around family and church. Yet, going to church and spreading Gods word was a custom that to this day I still enjoy and perform. When considering my childhood overall, my behavior changes were shaped by reinforcement and punishment from mainly my mother. Skinner’s Operant Conditioning Theory best describes my childhood because the theory states that during the development of a child, behavior changes were shaped by reinforcement and punishment (Boyd & Bee, 2006).
As far as my elementary and middle school years, I really never tried as much as I should have. I always tended to “join the crowd” which most of the time was not a good idea. It was my high school years that I finally realized my talents of helping one another. During my sophomore, junior, and senior year, I really engaged on the community. I had countless hours of community service helping tutor students and work in the special education classroom. By having the opportunity to work with the disabled led me to where I am today with my current job that I talk about later on.
My work ethic and jobs that I have had in my nineteen years on the earth says the most about me. At the age of 14, I started as a dishwasher and cook for a restaurant in Marshall County Kentucky. My work ethic and morale advanced me to a kitchen manager’s position. I maintained this position until last week. During that time, I moonlighted by taking on a job as a Disability Assistant and Instructional Assistant for my local school district. I was hired right after I earned my high school diploma. I chose to accept the Disability Assistant and Instructional Assistant job because my philosophy is that children are the future, and I feel that my teachings can help make a difference in the children’s lives as well at their future. In addition, I love to observe them learn and grow and be a part of the authority of the future. As a future teacher, each time I see their heads light up with understanding, it brings joy to my heart.
My personal, professional, and academic goals can either be known as long-term and short-term. These goals reflect on my progress with Ashford University. Identifying long- and short-term educational and career goals is vital for online learners like me. A short-term career plan focuses on a timeframe ranging from the coming year to the next few years, depending on the job seeker. The key characteristic of short-term career planning is developing realistic goals and objectives that you can accomplish in the near future (Hansen, 2007).
A long-term career goal planning usually involves a planning window of five years or longer and involves a broader set of guidelines and preparation. Businesses, careers, and the workplace are rapidly changing, and the skills that you have or plan for today may not be in demand years from now. Long-range career planning should be more about identifying and developing core skills that employers will always value while developing your personal and career goals in broad strokes (Hansen, 2007).
People might think they are the kind of person who cannot stick to their goals, or just are not mentally tough enough, but the truth is: This is not who they are. This is only what they been doing. It is very important to look over the obstacles and not let them interfere with goals. An Ashford degree relates to my goals because the degree creates a learning process rather than an obstacle.
My short term goals that I have set forth would be to settle down and re-start my life. For the past 5 years, it has been total ciaos. All I can remember is work, work, and more work. Yes, the money was great, but I need to settle down and realize that money is not everything. My philosophy is that since money is not everything I need to enjoy life while I have the chance. I have realized that in the past, I have steered away from God, and need to get back on the right track like I was on during my childhood. Also, another short term goal would be to complete my bachelor’s degree as soon as possible. Ways to achieve this goal would be to not give up with Ashford and keep taking classes back to back. As for the long term goals, they would be to become a teacher at my local elementary school, and go for my masters and rank one degree.
In conclusion, I have provided a concrete understanding of what I remember about what molds me today. Major topics that I have expressed included: what I remember about my family, what things I remember about my childhood, what jobs I have had in my life, and my personal, professional, and academic goals. All of the criteria mentioned throughout this reflective paper about are what makes me unique. One quote that I would like one to gain from my reflection on my youth is that a person never knows someone until they walk a mile in their shoes. This is one statement that I have valued tremendously and hope that one can follow this in their daily life.
