What is a hero? Is it superman? Is it your mom or dad? Is it your teacher? There are many people that are considered heroes. Some are just every day people, and some are super-human. Characteristics of heroes vary from era to era. Now people who are just simply a good person are considered a hero. But, back in ancient times to become a hero took much more. It took honesty, wisdom, and in some cases, wealth and superhuman abilities. With time new stories and beliefs are uncovered. In ancient times there were heroes that we can study today through books. Some of the most well known heroes are: Achilles, Odysseus, Aneius, Socrates, Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and King Arthur.
Achilles was a well known Greek hero. He was a warrior that faught long and hard for his people. He was a superhuman, believed to be part god. His mother dipped him in holy water when he was a child. However, she didn’t get his feet because that is what she was holding him by, which later was the reason for his death, because he was shot in the back of the foot, where we would today call our Achilles tendon. Achilles is seen partially after he has died and gone to the underworld in the book “The Odyssey” by Homer. Achilles says to Odyssues while he is down there; “By god, I would rather slave on earth for another man—some dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive—than rule down here over all the breathless dead.” Here many people don’t understand why Achilles was so unhappy. He lived a very blessed and heroic life on earth, and now he has nothing to show for ...

Essay What Makes a True Hero? - What makes a hero. Is it the sharp, wide eyes; the perfect, slicked back hair; the toned, muscular body. Is it the cape, tights, or symbol etched in the material sprawled across their broad chest. What about the heart the hero has; the traits that make them a hero. The true characteristics of a hero are not their superpowers or excellent ability to fight, but their willingness to save others and help those who cannot defend themselves. Their honesty, total selflessness, and bravery, in no particular order, are some of the things that make someone a hero....   [tags: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight] 612 words

What Makes a Hero? Essay - Heroes are present in many stories, old and new. Many heroes also carry similar traits that establish them as a great hero. Essay about What makes a Hero? - When a person thinks about what it means to be a hero to another person, generally they believe it just means doing something nice or kind for that person. Now if you were to ask the same question of that person that was helped, they would probably give you a far more detail description of what a hero is or meant to them. The difference in understanding what people believe a true hero is, you first must understand what it takes to be a real hero. What Makes a Hero? Essay - Everyday, society misconceives identities. In the eyes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A hero is no braver than any ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” Heroism, in Emerson’s perspective, is the ability to stand out for longer, and to endure hardships for greater durations. The passengers on United Flight 93, which was hijacked by terrorists as part of the September 11 attacks on the U.S demonstrated bravery like few other civilians can measure up to. Although it is not clear whether passengers on the other hijacked flights fought back persistently, it is known that the passengers on Flight 93 attempted to take control of the plane, and were successful....   [tags: Character Analysis] 1365 words

What Makes a Hero Essay - What Makes a Hero After spending over a week reading the story "Beowulf", we can all come to the conclusion that he is a hero. Sure, he saves countries from monsters, has incredible strength and wisdom, and is fearless- the typical fictional hero. However, when I hear the word hero, I think in terms of an everyday hero. In my mind, a hero is someone who performs courageous acts even if the consequences can be fatal. A hero doesn't have to be some big muscled guy who beats up bad guys. My example of a hero is a fireman....   [tags: Papers] 586 words

The Journey Home: What Makes a Hero Essay - The Journey Home: What Makes a Hero What constitutes an epic story. Certainly, literary expectations have come to define a story as a series of events revolving around one or more characters. An epic, however, must possess one attribute that a story may or may not contain; a hero. The Odyssey is an epic and therefore, it does contain a hero and perhaps even more than one. A hero cannot simply just exist, though, he or she must be shaped into the role through a series of adventures and misadventures that help the reader sympathize and identify with the hero’s progress towards a specific goal....   [tags: Essays Papers]
