In the early years of education students were punished for things such as writing left-handed and speaking a language other than English in the class room. In the years since then there have been many changes and advances in the field of education. These changes include everything from how to treat students in the classroom, to what to teach students, and which students were deemed fit to be educated. Another area, in which this profession has undertaken growth and development, is the qualities that teacher need to possess in order for them to become more effective in the education of their students. In this paper I will discuss the qualities that are necessary for effective teaching, supported with information from an interview with Dr. Ginny Maurer.
Since the education profession is one that is ever evolving and constantly changing, it is very important for teacher to possess the qualities that are needed in order for them to be as effective as possible. One of these qualities is being able to motivate students to push themselves to learn. The able to create a passion within the student for an education is something that every teacher should be striving for during their career. In my interview with Dr. Maurer, she said that getting to know your students and making the class as interesting and engaging as possible are two ways to help motivate students toward an education. She went on to say that teachers need to plan around the students, be realistic, and as interactive as possible. By motivating students to think for themselves, they will be able to accomplish more and become the leaders of their own lives.

With all of the qualities that teachers need to possess in order to become an effective teacher the main thing to remember is that teaching is all about the little thing. A teacher, no matter how great, will never be able to radically transform the life of every student they come into contact with. Nevertheless an effective teacher will never stop trying and they will, more times than not, have a positive effect in the lives all of their students. In conclusion teaching is about having fun, being flexible, working with others in order to add substance to the topic, and leading students down the path to an education that will continue to enrich their lives for years after the classroom doors have closed behind them.
The Role of the Teacher states that the teacher has a significant influence on society. Irving Layton discusses the topic of how education in schools, colleges, and universities are not achieving what they were intended to create. Schools were supposed to give students the tools to self-improve and the develop a mind to do so. Layton goes on to explain that the criticism has fallen on the teachers but it is usually the school board who is at fault. However, Layton also talks about how teachers need to be passionate about their jobs and continually expanding their knowledge in order to successfully instruct the students...
Accordingly, in my Overview of Education course my instructor, Professor Means granted us the opportunity to accumulate a team of intelligent and creative colleagues in order that we may be able to discover, ideate, investigate, and interpret what an effectual educator is and the multifarious qualities they heartily possess. Through successful collaboration amongst one another, we were able to paint a portraiture of an effective educator. Collaboratively, we deduced that an effective teacher is not only one who instructs students in an effective manner, but also one who is fair to all students and humble in all of his/her actions in and out of the classroom. An effective educator is also one who is goal-oriented, intrinsically motivated, and passionate towards the students emulating him/her. Individually, we utilized a supplemental resource, in which we interviewed any teacher of our predilection and integrated an expansive range of concepts, and...
In order to become a teacher she has to pursue higher education, graduate with a Bachelor degree, and pass the certification test. Teachers are not in the profession for the money or for the glory, but they truly have a passion for young people. They want to make a difference in the lives of their students. Teachers do not desire to see students fail classes, and they do not enjoy placing failing grades on assignments that the students didn’t put any effort in to. They would much rather have classrooms full of students who are eager and willing to learn. They don’t enjoy standing up in the front of the classroom staring at blank faces, but they desire to see students engaging and being excited about learning. A teacher’s work is never finished and she is never satisfied with the way things are. The responsibility of a teacher is great. Robert J. Marzano, author of The Art and Science of Teaching says, “The teacher must provide clear direction to students and generate an atmosphere in which all students feel valued and intellectually challenged.”(85) She is always looking for ways to make the classroom experience more enjoyable, and one of her top priorities is making sure that her students feel loved. We need to understand that the ideas that many people have about teachers are
One must be very knowledgeable and understanding of the content that is to be presented. It is important that the teacher be able to teach lessons that are both rigorous and clear to diverse learning styles.
A teacher is as effective as the plan they undertake to teach and learn. In determining what constitutes an effective teacher specific consideration should be given to various areas that encompass effective teaching and learning such as knowledge of child development, planning, teaching and learning strategies and knowledge of Curriculum content.
... After all, when we discuss and aspire for teacher effectiveness the progress of our students comes first, so it is our responsibility to make sure we provide that chance for everyone.
There has been an inability amongst academics (Campbell, Kyriakids, and Robinson, 2003; Muijs, 2006) to agree on a set or method for quantifying the characteristics of what makes a teacher effective. This stems from societies progression over time, as the needs of communities have shifted so to has what it deems necessary, and in turn what it requires from its students and teachers. Many theorists () have presented varying, yet interrelated, characteristics of what, at the time, was considered “effective practice” ( , , p. ), however, it would not be feasible to discuss all of these in the scope of this paper. The following aims to address the most frequently mentioned characteristics of an effective teacher including; being professional and proactive,
The attributes of an outstanding teacher are deeply rooted in being an effective instructor whose primary focus is to develop an impactful learning environment conducive to promoting the success of the whole student. An effective teacher utilizes best practices in the classroom to guide instruction that promotes the success of students within the educational setting. This type of teacher would also seek opportunities to develop positive relationships with students by learning their interest, learning styles, and comfort level with school subjects as well as to be cognizant of environmental factors which may impact their learning. An effective teacher collects and analyzes data and uses the data in decision making in order to provide
It is hard to define precisely which characteristics or attributes are required for a teacher to be considered highly-qualified. There are many schools of thought concerning which teaching styles and techniques are the “best” or the most effective. There have been contradictory results gathered from studies meant to determine the attributes of teachers that translate into the most effective classroom performances (Anthony, Goldhaber, 2003).
The overall essence of education or knowledge acquisition is reflected in an axiom by Confucius which says “Tell me, and I will forget; show me, and I will remember; but involve me, and I will understand. Back then, it was clear that learning was a comprehensive process which involves passionate exchanges between students and their teachers; unfortunately this is not the case in most modern classrooms. Instead of the expected bidirectional communication between learners and teachers, in the modern learning environment there is a unidirectional system which involves the teacher incessantly hurling facts at students who, due to their passive roles as mere receptacles, have fallen asleep or; in the case of “best” students are mindlessly taking notes. This leads to a situation where knowledge has neither been conferred nor acquired.
First of all, what is a good teacher? According to the Educational Psychology Book, a good teacher should know their subject matter and be able to commutate it to their students. Also, they need to enjoy their students and be well prepared for class. Good teachers know how their students learn and make sure all students in the class are getting the most education they can. To be a good teacher I think the teacher has to be energetic and motivate their students. They have to be willing to work long hours for little pay and be a true friend to their students. Student show more than ever need to feel trust in their teacher and have respect for their teacher. Only good effective teacher get respect.
There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined. However i`ve always considered several of them essential. In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying, doesn`t underestimate the children, has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job.
It is expected that the profession of teaching embraces many qualities of any other professional practice. Teachers must possess a combination of many qualities beginning with a strong academic background and wide-ranging knowledge. The National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching (2003) it is the knowledge of students, curriculum, subject matter, pedagogy, education – related legislation and the specifically teaching context that is the foundation on effective teaching, and a firm foundation on which to construct well educated judgments.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
